Guest guest Posted January 1, 2001 Report Share Posted January 1, 2001 We woke up to a nice dusting of snow this morning in Central Alabama... Perfect weather for staying in and watching the parades and Bowl games... This is the second accumulation of snow we have had this season which is very rare here. Snow plows? What the heck are those? *G* We Do have a few trucks that go out spreading sand but otherwise all we can hope for is that the roads are passable for our shifts or go in early to sleep. The hospital has a bad weather policy with sporadic "pick up points" across the area and our incentive to make it is that we don't get another point for being late. :-) Our hospital does encourage folks that live in the outlying areas to come in before the weather gets bad and sleep, as well as those that will have problems getting home after their shift, and has even on occasion provided those Wonderfu! l "floatie" air mattresses when beds got short. All that said, we still like to see a lil of the white stuff down here on occasion, run out to build our skinny snow men, make snow angels with grass dresses, and enjoy it while it lasts. When I worked at the hospital, I knew a woman who would call out in the snow, and she lived a block or so away and could walk, when there were people who lived in other states who made it! It's partly dedicating, and not wanting to leave patients in the lurch, along with a bit of having to pay the bills. We're all human! And personally, I think ice is a whole lot worse to drive in than snow. If I were not to make it to work, it would be considered a call in and I would lose my weekend program. If the weather is looking bad, I try to go in the night before and sleep at the hospital. They will allow me to sleep in a room as long as I need to. Fortunately, 30 miles of my trip is on I 55 which is very well traveled and usually in really good shape after an ice storm. Last winter there was an ice storm and all the people that lived within a few miles of the hospital called in and said they couldnt get there and all of us who lived far away made it just fine. I love the snow too, but especially enjoyed it this year because I had the ability to stay home and enjoy it. I hate being on the road in a storm, not so much because the driving is bad, because I am pretty good at driving in snow, but many other people just drive way too fast in poor conditions, and I can't trust them. --------Jeanine Re: [OBnurses] Snow?? Am finished here on February 25th. But that sure is a long drive!! And then in June want to go to Alaska. Any OB nurses from Alaska on here?? Would love to hear from other OB travelers too. My inlaws and family are in Milwaukee and it's chest high in places. As for me I am in sunny but cool Florida..no snow but it sure has been chilly for us with frost on the car windows ( I hear the " poor baby " moans now...lol) We are also hiring with incentives for all areas of OB. When Ilived in Wisconsin we used to have blizzard parties in an empty unit..we could sleep there as long as we had to. There was no calling in with snow excuses...they sent the sherrif out on a snowmobile to take you to the main road to catch a ride. Here when we have hurricane warnings, if you are scheduled you come in with 3 days of clothes, food and water, and they also let you bring the family (but not pets) The kids love the adventure of camping in the hospital and having the peds playroom at their disposal. Fortunately, we never get hit bad as we are inland about 40 miles. Last year a nurse got fired for not coming to work and choosing to evacuate to Tennesee with her family to wait out the storm...only she brought back pictures. Administration was not amused. Guest guest Posted January 2, 2001 Report Share Posted January 2, 2001 This is probably a fluke thing and will likely never happen again, but... last January, when we had 20 in of snow (almost never happens here in NC), once we made it to the hospital, we worked our shifts, then the hospital shuttled employees to hotels in the neighborhood to sleep. Some employees slept at the hospital and they were running out of places to put mattresses, so they contracted with the local hotels to put us up. I worked a LONG 7p shift and then a coworker and myself went to the hotel. Just the 2 of us had a 2 bedroom suite with a kitchen and a fireplace. After we slept all day, we went down stairs and were fed a nice dinner at no charge. Then we were shuttled back to the hospital to work the next shift. It was truly one of the few times I can say the hospital did something right by us, and our morale showed it. We were all rested well, and we felt appreciated and worked hard the next night. Now if the same type of snow storm comes again, ! we'll have to wait and see if we get the same treatment. This is definitely not part of our severe weather plan, and was put in place at the last minute as space ran out at the hospital. But we sure enjoyed it while we had it!!! Happy New Year to all!
