antibiotics, allergic

I, too, am allergic to penicillin and sulfas.

When I got a kidney infection a couple years ago, my allergist was

able to desensitize me so I could take an antibiotic for it.

I don't think it's that unusual a procedure, but it takes several hours.

They take a single dose of the med needed, dilute it massively, then

give it in miniscule amounts over a few hours, watching for any

reactions .

When I had this done, it was the easiest response I've ever had to an

antibiotic in my life.

Unfortunately, the desensitization response is not lasting. It's only

good for the course of that med at that time.

I'd gladly do it again, though, since it worked out so well.

As far as I know, only allergist/immunologists do this procedure.
