I am not quite sure when it happened, but Adam has turned from a baby to a

big boy and he is getting ready for preschool. Believe me - out of our

whole family, he is the only one who is ready for him to go to preschool.

lol Anyway, in about six weeks, he will be three years old already. On

June 14, he will be going in for his testing for preschool. Actually, he is

doing so well that his therapist are wondering if he will qualify. His

speech is slow, so they think that will get him in. Then again, he is not

crazy about strangers, so he may go in and do nothing for them. Luckily, I

happen to work for the school system that Adam will be in. It is a large

system with 16 elementary schools of which probably 10 or so have special

needs preschool. I know many of the preschool teachers and they are

wonderful. Anyway, he should start at the end of August when the kids go

back to school. If anyone has words of advice, we would appreciate them.

Wish us luck.

Donna - gram to Adam almost 3 mds and grandma to Skylar almost 3 who now refuses

to call me gram.

My advice: Take a deep breath in. Now, breathe out. Repeat -- often! I

remember transitioning Molly from First Steps to preschool. I was a WRECK!

Molly automatically qualified, b/c she if Deaf, but I still had to produce

all the documentation, get the physical, get the eye exam, etc.... They DID

try to do some testing before she entered preschool, but that was when Molly

was going through her, " If I close my eyes, you can't see me " phase. As a

result, they got NO results on those evaluations! Good thing we didn't need

THOSE results to qualify her!

....And, of course, there's the initial ARC meeting to determine services.

Even though I'm a special ed teacher and have done hundreds of those

meetings, it was just plain DIFFERENT from the " other side of the table! "

Tell his parents to write down any questions and/or concerns they have going

into the meeting. I forgot half of what I wanted to ask, b/c I didn't write

it down!

Remember: Breathe in, breathe out. Repeat. Repeat. Repeat!

:-)

Hi - Thanks for the advice. Unfortunately, Adam's father is not in

the picture a whole lot, but I will be attending the testing and initial

meeting with my daughter. I know these thing can be overwhelming so I am

glad I can attend and she doesn't have to go alone. Adam's OT just happens

to be a personal friend of mine for years, so she has kind of filled us in

on what to expect. I will tell her to start writing down her questions -

that is a good idea. Now - we're breathing. in - out - in - out. LOL
