Income Parity

Compared with Western economies we are considered 'Underdeveloped' or

'Developing' economies.

However in India few industries have completely 'emerged' and have come to

parity with Developed Economies. Salaries/ income in these industries (if you

remove the top one percentile) are at par with Western economies.

These industries are:

1. Entertainment Industry: Film Stars, Actors, Music directors, singers, TV and

Media, Satellite rights .........etc.

2. Financial / Banking: Especially in private investment banks

3. Sports: Especially Cricket

The industry / Profession which is " Underdeveloped " (financially) in spite of

being " World Class " (Technically) is........

Medicine.

Moral of the Story,

Until doctors

Learn to entertain and have fun

Learn their Finance and Economics and,

Learn to play sport.

They will remain 'Underdeveloped' in one aspect or the other.

Swami Vivekananda challenged us with the slogan: " Arise, Awake, stop not till

the goal is reached'.

The same can be relevantly read as:

'Set you Goal, Awake and Arise "

One reason why doctors continue to be underpaid: mushrooming of quacks and

on top of that, highly unregulated medical profession. The Govt is clearly

unwilling to check the quacks (read day time looters) who are killing people

in open market. In a sense, this takes sheen off qualified doctors and

dilutes the market. The 'value' and hence money-value of doctors decreases.

BAMS and BHMS doctors add to the competition. In Western world, where even a

barber needs license to open his/her shop, one can understand the

'empowerment' the state gives you for your qualification and degree. At

least, there is a power to your pen (prescription) here. In India, you

prescribe PO Amoxycillin for URI to a kid, and a quack will write you off

with a 'more powerful' Ceftriaxone injection! Compete now if you can!

Note: There might be other 'justifiable reasons' as some Public health

experts would jump into to justify existence of quacks, eg remote areas

where there are no medical facilities available.
