Guest guest
Hi everyone, Tomorrow is Adam' birthday. Big three. I can't believe how fast this time has gone by and that I have been a member of this site for three years already. Well Adam had his last OT and speech therapy through the First Steps group in our area which ends when the kids turn three. He went for his preschool testing and will be starting preschool in the end of August. I think his mom may have a nervous breakdown thinking about sending him. She just keeps saying he is so little to go to school. I am fortunate in that I work in the school system and know several of the preschool teachers and I was able to pick his teacher. Adam has now graduated from terrible two's, which actually weren't so terrible, to the what I like to call the " Oh dear Lord help me " three's. I called it this because lately every time I turn around, I am saying " Oh dear Lord help me " . For example, the other day, I was spending the evening alone with Adam while his mom got a much deserved evening out. While I was cleaning up the lovely milk design he made on the floor, he managed to put six dvd's in the vcr. Last night, we were shopping and my daughter and I decided to stopped (with Adam) for a bite to eat. In the restaurant, Adam was crying and screaming because he wanted his socks and shoes off. Get the picture. I hope this is a short evil period he is going through. lol Lucky for him he is sooooooo cute that it is hard to stay upset with him. Anyway, Adam has come a long way. He can recognize the ABC's and numbers to 10. He feeds himself with very little mess. He has a wonderful imagination and loves to act out movies, especially Shrek. He is starting to talk quite a bit now. He will repeat almost everything we say but is a little slower to talk on his own. He can pronounce the words we tell him very well so I am sure very soon he will be talking up a storm. Our biggest challenge now is potty training. He wants no part of it and screams when we put him on the potty. I am sure he will get it eventually. Guest guest
Dear Donna, Preschool will help with the potty training because he will see that other children are going on the potty " like big boys and girls " ( I sound confident though Jonas is not yet trained). Jonas will go on the potty every single time we take him, but he will never tell us when he has to go! That was a summer plan for us, but I am not going to be able to deal with it when he has open heart surgery in the coming weeks, so we will postpone it a bit longer. Jonas is in the terrible period of behavior now too. It is as though I could spend the entire day doing nothing but " putting out Jonas' fires! " He goes from one bad thing to another some days until I am saying, like you, " Lord help me to keep my cool in this time when I am feeling like blowing my stack! " We were at a restaurant recently that has an automobile theme to it. There are cars in the restaurant that are antique ones and motorcycles hanging from the ceiling etc. We received our food and I made sure that all of my food was out of Jonas' reach or he has been know to try to pull my plate right off the table. When all of a sudden, my brother in law becomes aware of some " motorcycle dudes " sitting at the table behind us who were saying, " Hey, thanks for the fries little Dude! " Jonas was taking fries off of his brother's plate and throwing them up over his head and behind him. The guys were catching them and eating them. I am so glad they were good natured about it! Sometimes, despite our best efforts, we just have to smile and say, " Sorry " . Thank Goodness for people with a sense of humor! Hang in there Donna! Preschool will go alright. I would recommend some good vitamins with extra " C " for the onslaught of illnesses that befall the newly schooled! Guest guest
Donna and Barb, I have just recently started taking my older son to preschool. I was really nervous at first because he doesn't like change and especially doesn't like new places and people. But he is behind on his speech and he is having behavioral problems so we thought school would be good for him. At his previous sitter's house, there were only older kids and none his age. He's been getting really aggressive and so I thought maybe it was because he hangs around older kids. I also felt that being around kids his own age and seeing them talking, would probably help. I was right. He's only been there a month and he loves it. Actually, the first day, he had no problem letting me go. He gave me a kiss, waved goodbye and took off running for the other kids. I cried. He is always bringing home crafts and drawings and he loves putting them on the fridge and sharing them with everyone. I've already noticed him sharing his toys and " babying " his brother . He is even jibber jabbing more (not that I can understand any of it, at least he is trying though). Not to mention he sleeps better at night because he burns a lot more energy. Preschool has been a wonderful experience for our family. In addition, I also applied for speech therapy for through the same program gets his treatment from. So now, in addition to 's PT, I will have 's ST coming to our house on Thursdays. I think it will be nice because I will get to see what they do with for his delayed speech and start early on with the same techniques. As far as potty training, I was having the same issue with going to the potty when we took him but not telling us when he had to go. Then, one day (and I remember the day exactly, it was a Sunday) he just woke up and told me he did not want his pull ups on. I was a little nervous because he still had his accidents (especially if we got busy and forgot to ask him if he had to go), but I went with it. That whole day he took care of himself and come the night he still didn't want the pull ups on, so I let him be free. To this day, he has only had one accident . . . and that was six month ago. He just went cold turkey on his pull ups. So, I really feel that kids do the potty thing on their own time. They know when they are ready for it. And just so you know . . . You are not the only one with restaurant stories. My little loves to play with his food at all the wrong times. He tossed a handful of steak at this lady in the nearest booth. The pieces landed and stuck in her hair. After she turned around and gave us " the look " , I decided restaurants were not such a good idea. I felt so bad, all I could say was " I'm so sorry. " I've found that a lot of restaurants now do phone orders. So, the majority of the time, we call in and pick up our food. It's convenient when you have two little ones. Just wanted to let you guys know you're not alone. Guest guest
Barb - I have had an awful day and your french fry story has made me laugh myself to tears. I can just picture those " Harley guys " catching french fries and eating them. Thanks for the laugh. The preschool teacher did say they help with potty training. It will be part of his routine so maybe that will help. Luckily Adam seems to have a super immune system. Even when Skylar is sick (and she still has to come over sick or not so her mom can go to work), Adam hardly every seems to catch what she has (knock on wood). I know what you mean about all of those little germs. I work in our school system and I was always sick for about the first two years. Now I think I am immune to their little germs. Thanks again for a much needed laugh.
