Yes, I know it's not a magic number, Anne, but it's a nice additional piece

if information esp when you are first starting to figure out what is what for

yourself. I now have a pretty good idea without it but I still like to do the

numbers whenever I change recipes radically.

Thanks a lot for the information on how to figure the number...I just have a

copy of the list and no other information. That really helps.

for you but, as far as my computer-barely-competant mind can tell, you

can't just get the list from the site. You have to plug in a formula

to get the values. I have the list from McFarland's book but, even

that, is inadequate now with all the oils we have begun to use that he

didn't consider when he wrote it.

Its not a magical number , its just an arbitrary calculated

value set up to evaluate soap, and you can calculate it yourself. The

INS number is simply the average Iodine value subtracted from the KOH

sap value.

eg for oil XYZ, if the KOH sap value is 195, and the Iodine value is

112, then the INS would be 195 - 112 = 83

When Mcs book first came out, he was on a number of soaping

lists, and provided that information for people to calculate values

for oils not included in the list in the book.

OH. Well I just bought his book. I wish I had of known that before. At any

rate...I am sure the information will be well worth reading.
