Guest guest
My friend's son has both (age 8). She put him on medication because the school was about to kick him out since he was too much of a distraction in his autism class and regular 1st grade class. Once she medicated him, a behavior therapist (FBA) went to the school to evaluate him. (because the school didn't know how to handle his behaviors) The therapist never would have guessed he was the kid to evaluate. He remained seated at all times, stood in line and walked the halls with his class. He remained seated at lunch and played good on the playground. She told my friend she would have picked out 3 other kids in the class that she thought was autistic but not her son. His grades have improved and they haven't had anymore behavior problems since the medication. If you want her to talk to my friend email me and I'll pass on her info. She loves to speak with other parents. Mirielle pinkie6@... autism and ADHD?? just wondering if anyone has a child with both? starting to think maybe my son has both. what do you treat it with, any info would be great.thanks, meg
Guest guest
My son has both autism (pdd-nos) and severe ADHD. We've chosen not to medicate him at this time. He's only 3 years old. I just feel the medications are not safe enough and the long term effects are not known at this time. He was asked to leave the Head Start program due to his aggressive behaviors. He hurt his one-on-one aide. It's pretty challenging, but I don't see the ADHD much at home. It was very obvious in the school setting, though. Guest guest
My son has both; he's 10 and in 4th grade. His developmental pediatrician in NJ (when we lived there) was not anti-medication, but he was also pretty conservative about prescribing it. He always wanted to make sure that therapies were the first line of defense, and that the meds were a compliment, not a replacement, for appropriate therapy. We held off on meds for awhile, and around the second half of kindergarten his behavior was getting in the way of any further appropriate social skill development, so he, his teachers and I decided together that it was time. We tried one of the stimulent meds first, and he did horribly on it. The doctor then tried Strattera, and Connor has been on it since. We've done a few " trial runs " without the meds to see if it is actually still helping or if he's matured to the point he doesn't need it....within days the difference is obvious. My son even says his brain is more " out of control " without his Strattera, which says it all to me. Our current pediatrician is great about seeing Connor every few months to make sure there are no adverse effects, and when the first warnings came out a few years ago about possible liver damage (very rare), we were already in Texas but the NJ dev. pediatrician called us here to touch base and make sure we were aware of the warnings, and to advise us to see our pediatrician every few months (did I mention how much we loved this doctor??). Anyway, we've had great success with Strattera, and have seen none of the side effects. Our current pediatrician did say that it was the most anticipated and most disappointing ADHD medication in the last several years...in his experience it only helps maybe half the kids it's prescribed for, but on the plus side, those who are helped by it are helped greatly...it was just disappointing to the doctors that it doesn't help more kids. That's our experience. I've found that sometimes when our son has meltdowns or other behavior problems, we have to separate what is autism and what is adhd; all of us (his dad and I, teachers, etc.) need to remember that just because he's medicated for his ADHD, it doesn't mean he won't have autism issues. I do find that treating his ADHD makes it easier to focus on some of his autistic problems (noise sensitivity, repeating things ad nauseum, etc.), and it really does help keep his brain " clearer " -- that's directly from his viewpoint, which means a lot. e meg herrera wrote: just wondering if anyone has a child with both? starting to think maybe my son has both. what do you treat it with, any info would be great.thanks, meg

Guest guest
An excellent book to read is The LCP Solution. You can buy it on Amazon. It is about the increase in ADD, ADHD and dyspraxia. We used the product they were using during the testing (because you have to be careful about herbal medication because there is no standardization of product and something might say it contains XYZ but it might really not contain any of it). We noticed a huge difference and conducted our own double-blind study with . It really made a difference for him. Hilda **************Wondering what's for Dinner Tonight?
