Guest guest
Your mention that he's never been this way before with you leads me to believe that something is happening in the classroom to trigger his behavior, especially if it's been going on for weeks. I know schools aren't always really helpful at analyzing why behaviors are happening but that would probably be the best place to start. Some physiological things to consider would be that if he took an antibiotic for the ear infection, he could now have an overgrowth of yeast which could cause difficult symptoms. Treating with a prescription or over the counter antifungal would be helpful in this case, along with giving some probiotics. Natural antifungals that you can buy at most health food stores include caprylic acid, olive leaf extract, grapefruit seed extract and garlic. Also check to see if he's being exposed to any chemicals or perfumes he may be reacting to at school. Was there any recent spraying? Is the teacher wearing a new perfume? I've seen some really bizzare reactions by kids that can be tied to such things. Years ago, my son became very violent after drinking Dole Pine-Orange-Banana juice. It was the only time he's ever been violent in his life. It was such a horrible experience that I still shudder at the thought of that juice combo. If all of the above things have been considered and rule out as issues, look at what he's eating or drinking. Gaylen
Guest guest
I just got called in to the school. Zach had a major melt-down or I guess that is what you would call it. I got there and he had thrown things, spit, hit, knocked things off the desks. Even after I got there and we went back to the classroom (he was in the office) he was aggressive with me which he has never been before. He would hit at me, kick, act like he was going to bite me and try to head butt, then he would hit himself. They said this had been going on for the last six weeks to a certain extent. Today he could not go to the library because he was abusing his books and that seemed to be the antecedent. They also had a lady come in that was suppose to help him with his sign language so that probably did not help to have a stranger that he was not prepared for to come into the classroom. The main lady on autism from Region X (Charlotte Myers) is suppose to come tomorrow, but I have never seen my child like that so I did not know what to do. They are saying minor tantrums like this are common at school. Please if anyone has any ideas or suggestions let me know. He had an ear infection the last of January and it seems the problems really developed during and after this. I haave already taken him to two doctors and they say his ears are fine. One doctor is doing allergy tests on him and they should be back in 3 weeks. I am emailing everyone on my Autism list to see what they think. Guest guest
I cant offer you any help because I am in a similar situation. I cant even get anyone to test my child even though everyone agrees it is Aspergers. All I can tell you is you arent alone even though it feels like it most of the time. Guest guest
Have you tried the DAN protocol? My son's rages (once our biggest problem) disappeared after we started the protocol--specifically after we started treating his not-very-obvious stomach problems. Guest guest
It's how they are approaching him. How many people grab you by the hand and pull you along? How many people when you say you need a minute make you complie anyway? Does he have a schedule? Are the school personnel all the same? Have any of them divorced???? or had a baby? Look for diruptions in the ENVIRONMENT- BEhavior is all about environment. Look closely. Go visit ALL day if you have too and take notes. Guest guest
Gail, ask for a Functional Behavior Assessment (FBA). Our kids don't start being aggressive out of the blue without something triggering it. Generally when out son acts out at school, the trigger has been another child bullying him when the teacher wasn't looking. Sadly, it usually has to escalate to school refusal and aggression before I can get anyone at school to listen. Guest guest
>I cant offer you any help because I am in a similar situation< I started a group awhile back that is for those of us whose child with autism hurts themselves and/or others. Tristan is most of the time self injurious, but sometimes he does bite us and the school staff. For those who want to discuss these issues and need understanding and support please join us. http://health.groups.yahoo.com/group/autism_self_injurious_behavior/
Guest guest
> BEhavior is all about environment.< I am sorry, but I don't agree with this. It sometimes is the enviroment but without a thorough FBA you can't know for sure. There is no doubt that Tristan suffers from medically related issues that are reflected in his behavior. We don't have the means to do the DAN! protocol or rather go to DAN! doctors. The neurologist and Ped Gastro's (two) have seen him but they certainly don't " believe " in the DAN! protocol and they haven't helped him at all. I think that you have a high functioning child but Tristan is not. Many of these kids that are more severe have difficulty with behavior. Guest guest
Minor tantrums? That sounds pretty serious. And going on for 6 weeks without informing you??? It sounds like you are doing everything you can to identify possible medical reasons for his behavior problems. What is the school doing? Has an FBA been done? Does your son have a BIP in place and is the school following it? If the tantrums are occurring just at school and not in other settings, you could surmise there probably is not a medical reason for his behaviors. Geraldine HELP!!!
