Guest guest
Dr. Fehring, you write in Ethics and Medics, Feb. 2006, that " relatively few couples in the United States use modern methods of NFP (only about 120,000) .... " citing Advance Data of cdc. The data cited for the year 2002 is .02% " using periodic abstinence - natural family planning " which comes out to 123,00 users as you report. But your report does not include the .07% in the line above who use " Periodic abstinence - calendar rhythm " (431,000). Nor does it include the 38% " not using contrception " (23,392,000) among whom 7.4% (4,555,000) " had intercourse in 3 months before interview. " Furthermore, the survey was conducted under the title " current contraceptive status " a title that might confuse users of nfp. Would you care to comment? The Mainichi Survey (Japan) has ceased its bi-ennial surveys since 1991 I believe, but its report of that year indicated that one of six couples in Japan, wife in the age category of 20-29, use the temperature method. Numbers are small, but the surveyers also indicated that an extrapolation pointed to about a million couples in Japan who were using periodic abstinence without contraceptives. Fr. Zimmerman. .
