Guest guest
The Guttmacher Institute, citing Mosher WD et al., Use of contraception and use of family planning services in the United States: 1982-2002, Advance Data from Vital and Health Statistics, No. 350. 2004, estimates that there are 133,000 users of Natural Family Planning, or 0.4 percent of the U.S. population. Three times as many couples (1.2 percent) still use calendar rhythm. Guest guest
The number “0.4%”, I believe, is a bit tricky to quote since it is based not on total US population, nor total female US population, nor total fertile-aged female US population, but the 89% of the 42M fertile, sexually active women who practice contraception according to Mosher WD et al. • Among the 42 million fertile, sexually active women who do not want to become pregnant, 89% are practicing contraception. 8 • 64% of reproductive-age women who practice contraception use reversible methods, such as oral contraceptives or condoms. The remaining women rely on female or male sterilization. 9 I think it is an important distinction to make when we answer the question how many people use NFP. Does the 133,000 NFP users seem low to anyone else? Damon Owens Percentage of couples using NFP Hi everyone A young woman who is writing a paper asked me if I knew the percentage of people using NFP. Guest guest
The 0.4% is based on those women who responded to "ever" using NFP methods including rhythm. The rate for mucus and temp NFP methods is more like 0.2% when the women respondents answered to "current" use of NFP methods. The rates are based upon a random selection of US women who are between 15-44 years of age -- the years of the highes fertility potential. J. Guest guest
What strikes me about these low numbers, is the huge impact that could be made among the culture of women in this age group with an intervention that would increase this. We have been teaching NFP in conjunction with the parishes for marriage preparation in this area for a long time now. It is tempting to get discouraged when couples do not adopt the method. However, just imagine what a huge impact it is if we can get even 1 in every 10 couples to adopt this method of family planning for the long term. Guest guest
Oh how right Dr Klaus is ! As she knows I have had little to no success in getting a teen program of any kind going. But I do alot of Marriage Prep work. Last night I did private follow-up sessions with 5 couples.. One was married in their 40's with 3 kids learning because of RCIA. using the method and pretty happy but " afraid of fertility at this age". all four others were "afraid" ( their own words) for one reason or the other. I am so tempted to put a slide of JPII in my program with the big words "DO NOT BE AFRAID" The best gift NFP ever gave me was the knowledge of my body and the ability to use that knowledg to handle physical problems without fear. We really have no trust in God at this point in our world. And hormonal contraception feeds into that fear very successfully. I ,for one, would be much more afraid of the cancer links and other side effects than I would be of a baby.. but the "medicine has all the answers" crowd still hold too much power over women. Around here even TeenStar is too late as parents put the kids on contraceptives as close to 1st menes as possible. Well , I go back for 5 more couples tonight. Could you all pray that atleast one or two will not be afraid. Guest guest
I turned a Lutheran friend on to NFP and she was also very “afraid” in the beginning…but she became so confident of her charting, her regular cycles, and the method after just maybe 6 months or so that she is no longer (she’s been using it for a year since her son was born). I always just say “if you’re really afraid at first, play it safe and abstain if you are unsure. It’ll be a relatively short period of time before you are more sure of yourselves and the method, and it will be worth it in the long run!” Kim Re: Percentage of couples using NFP Oh how right Dr Klaus is ! Guest guest
It may be .2% of women of childbearing age rather than all women. Percentage of couples using NFP Getting back to the question of how many women couples in the US use modern methods of NFP. I am a tad confused. Damon Owens asked if the 133,000 figure seems to low. I thought not -- since I was corrected in a manuscript I sent to the Journal Contraception and they (the reveiwers) correct the figure I gave to 124,000. And Bower cites the Guttmacher Institute -- that cites the Vital Statistics data from the Natural Survey of Family Growth (NSFG) and provides a figure of 133,000. I am currently reviewing another report from the NSFG from the CDC - Vital and Health Statistics Series 23, Numver 25, December --Fertility, Family Planning, and Reproductive Health of US Women: Data From the 2002 NSFG. You can download the report yourself: see: http://www.cdc.gov/nchs/products/pubs/pubd/series/sr23/pre-1/pre-1.htm If you look at Table 56: they list the number and precent for all contraceptive methods. As reported before, NFP = 0.2% of the total. The total is 61,561,000 women of reproductive age. The percentage of pill users is 19% which is 11,696,590 users in the US. The percentage of NFP users is 0.2% of the total or (according to my math) 1,231,220 women. If you add the .7% of women who report use of rhythm -- then the total of periodic abstinence among US women is: 5,540,490 women. So Damon -- the 133,000 figure cited is low -- unless my math is wrong! J. Fehring Professor of Nursing Marquette University

Guest guest
, and all, Unfortunately, I think your math is wrong. 0.2% of 61,561,000 women of reproductive age is 123,122. The multiplier is 0.002, not 0.2. Mark Stegman, M.D. Percentage of couples using NFP Getting back to the question of how many women couples in the US use modern methods of NFP. I am a tad confused.
