Guest guest
During the positive practice, it should be so fast that he does not have time to go in the pot. When he goes in the pot during practice, it sends a mixed message since you cannot provide reinforcement during that time but you do want to reinforce going on the pot. Practice should be 10 times. I know it is a pain. I know it takes a long time. I know the child can be wetting the whole time to and from the pot. It is VERY important to follow the 10 times rule unless the child is reinforced by the negative attention that is given during practice. If that is the case, i wouldn't do practice at all. I have found that kids will urinate a little, us adults have a party, and the urine flow stops due to all the excitement. The solution is to provide quiet positive feedback when it starts, wait for a full emptying of the bladder, then give the party. I also gradually wait longer and longer to give the " party " , finally waiting until their hands are dry and they are out of the bathroom. Hope this was helpful! e <http://www.autismbehaviorconsult.com/> Everyone Can <http://www.autismbehaviorconsut.com/> Learn e Quinby, M.Ed. [ ] toilet training question Hi, I have a young student I work with that has a toileting program that up to now has worked well. The student (4 yo) initially had 0 luck with schedule training so we moved to habit training, after a long week we were successful nearly 100% of time when we targeted, we expanded to multiple target times still near 100%. WE faded the diapers, kept the targeted time and started using positive practice for accidents. EAch accident is a small amount of urine perhaps a half a cup at the max. Based on this we do 5x positive practice and state " you go pee pee in the potty " during the correction procedure he will go in the pot a little bit. So we increased the frequency we are taking him to 1x every 20 min. on about 4/5 trips he will void in the pot a little bit but will not empty his bladder and is continuing to have 4-5 accidents per day. We are only a few days into this so we are planning on running at least 10 days before modifying at all. If this continues what are your suggestions to train bladder emptying? Guest guest
, I trained my son myself using the potty training book from the UCSB Autism Center by Dunlap, Koeglel and Koegel, (this was before I knew about ABA or verbal behavior!)it's been endorsed by my sons BCBA, although she individualizes programs for each child. I didn't know about that kind of stuff then and it still worked like a charm. First thing I'd ask if it were me is, is he really ready? We used positive practice 3-5 times per accident. I think readiness and consistency are the real keys to a successful program. Part of the program is that you have to be ready to do a training program uninterrupted for several days depending on the child. You also remove diapers during the day right away and use alternating dry checks and sitting on the toilet at 15 minute intervals. It's really easiest to have the booklet and see the whole program than to try to explain it here, but I hope that helps a little anyway. Best of luck!
