Hi,

My husband has accepted a job offer in Horsham, PA. Our son has just

turned 7 and would be entering 1st grade in the Fall. We are looking

into relocating to the area -- either in PA or NJ.

Our son is currently in a mainstream Kindergarten with an aide. He

began engaging in stim behaviors in the mainstream preschool

classroom a couple of years ago and the district has been very slow

and, I would say, incompetent in dealing with this. We have an

excellent BCBA who works with us privately whom we have made

available to the district, but they have not used this as they could

have due, I think, to a combination of misplaced arrogance and

defensiveness.

We have watched our son go from being enthusiastic about attending

school to lukewarm, to increasingly resistant to it. This is despite

what appears to be a normal or near normal intelligence level (eg he

is reading with comprehension due to our interventions at home).

Despite his ASD diagnosis, I would describe him as pretty related. He

has always enjoyed and been interested in peers, tho needs support as

he is not yet fully able to express himself verbally and can be

easily overwhelmed in social situations at which time he would

typically respond by withdrawing or stimming. (He is easily

understood, speaks in sentences, etc. yet struggles to organize more

complicated thoughts/descriptions.) He does well at identifying

affect and loves to share humor.

We have usually been advised to keep him in the public school setting

so that he has maximum exposure to typical peers, but we have begun

to wonder whether there are public schools out there which will truly

do the right thing in terms of working with us to give him the proper

support in the classroom. So, we have recently begun to consider

private special needs schools in hopes of accessing a more consistent

level of expertise in the school setting.

So, having said all of that, we are looking for recommendations for

school districts and/or private schools in the Phil/central NJ area

that can truly meet our son's needs! Our experience with our current

district has been a nightmare which we do not have the time or energy

to repeat.

We would be truly forever indebted to anyone who can steer us in the

right direction.

Thanks!
