VBCA- (317) 849-4653 About This Workshop The Verbal Behavior Center for Autism uses the methods of applied behavior analysis and applied verbal behavior to teach language to children with autism and other disabilities. Heavy emphasis is placed on the analysis of verbal behavior developed by B.F. Skinner. Skinner taught us that the meaning of a word is found not in the form of the word itself but in its function. Therefore, a functional approach to language involves directly teaching the various ways that a word can function. Typical children do not need to be directly taught all of the various uses of language. Research has shown us, however, that children with language delays need special training on how to use words that are taught to them. For example, teaching a child to point to a cookie when asked does not mean that the child can say cookie when shown a cookie, can point to a cookie when asked to touch the one you eat, can say cookie when asked, " What has chocolate chips? " or can ask for a cookie when he or she wants a cookie. This workshop will introduce you to strategies and techniques to teach the functional use of language. In addition, you will learn the following: Ø How to capitalize on the child's motivation to keep learning fun Ø How to create a language-based environment Ø How to assess the child's primary language deficits and needs Ø How to determine if and what type of augmentative communication system is necessary (e.g., PECS, sign language) Ø Where to begin teaching Ø How to teach new skills using discrete trials Ø How to conduct training in the natural environment Ø How to use prompting, fading, and shaping techniques to bring about new behaviors Topics will range from teaching beginning skills, such as matching-to- sample, labeling, imitation, requesting, and making receptive discriminations to teaching advanced skills, such as verbs, adjectives, conversational skills, and requesting information (e.g., " Where are my shoes? " ). Data collection systems and session management will also be covered. This workshop is for the following: · Parents · Special education teachers · Speech and language pathologists · Behavior analysts · In-home trainers · Students · Direct care staff · School administrators About the Presenter Carl Sundberg is the behavior analyst for The Verbal Behavior Center for Autism.
