Guest guest
Hi Anabel, I'm from Ky, originally, and I call everyone, darlin', sweetie, honey, and so forth. I didn't realize that some people actually found that demeaning. I would never want to hurt anyone's feelings by saying that. I'm glad that you brought that to my attention. I'll be more careful when I'm doing patient care. I just thought that it showed them that I really cared. Guest guest
Hi Bev, Missed the original posting but I think most of us use some terms of endearment really when talking to our Mums, Over here in Derbyshire we tend to use " Duck " and " Love " a lot, tend to match it to what the mums use, Love Diane Re: [OBnurses] I think I got it > > Date: Wednesday, June 02, 1999 10:58 PM > > > > From: FreeMexcAF@... > > > > Carolyn > > > > What an informative site! Specially those of ya'll from the south! I know, I know.... I don't do that twang just right eh? (That's the north country thing!) I don't normally use them myself but have heard many other care providers do so, and without any mention of it being offensive except once a woman said " Don't rub my back there, and quite calling me honey " all in the same breath!...And since most women in labor will tell you just about anything, I'm sure if it were annoying to hear, most would tell you. It is however a good thing to be aware of so you can pick up on those " vibes " . Ever have those pts that you feel like your labor support is going nowhere fast and then they are talking on the phone next day talking about the angel of a nurse they had and how they focused on her voice to get through the contractions? Had one of those all day yesterday...never felt connected with her, yet afterwards I was her bestest friend! Laboring women are soemthing else! Guest guest
Thanks, Jan. THose nurses that have worked with me have lightly made jokes about the way I talk(the L is silent...more like tawk) but I have never had anyone tell me to not call them anything...in fact I had several tell me that my slow drawn out KY accent made them more at ease. I guess you are right about the " vibes " , as you can pick up on who you can sweet " tawk " and who you can't. Right Robin, Emmy, and Jeanie?
