Guest guest Posted April 2, 2005 Report Share Posted April 2, 2005 Hi, even though your son is doing the addition, he may not be on a level where he is ready for subtraction. Subtraction is a level of cognition where a child learns reversability- that is, reversing the numbers in addition gets you subtraction. Piaget labeled this stage as the concrete operational stage from ages 7 to 11 years old. My son was cognitively delayed and did not get this concept until he was around 9.5 yrs. old. When he got it, it just clicked and he learned subtraction very quickly. I'm sure there are other ways to memerize the subtraction. Keep working on it, eventually it will click. Here is a website on Piagets theory. I think every kid hits them but for our kids, they are sometimes a little delayed or scattered.
