DOING WHAT WE CAN DO

This world seems to be full of talent. I've never felt as if much ofit has come my way, so I appreciate this story.

It is about a wholesaler in New York who sent a letter to thepostmaster of a small Midwestern town. He asked for the name of anhonest lawyer who would take a collection case against a local debtorwho had refused to pay for a shipment of the wholesaler's goods. Hegot this reply:

Dear Sir:

I am the postmaster of this village and received your letter. I amalso an honest lawyer and ordinarily would be pleased to accepta case against a local debtor. In this case, however, I alsohappen to be the person you sold those crummy goods to. Ireceived your demand to pay and refused to honor it. I am alsothe banker you sent the draft to draw on the merchant, and I sentthat back with a note stating that the merchant had refused topay. And if I were not, for the time being, substituting for thepastor of our local church, I would tell you just where to stickyour claim.

Not many of us are multi-talented. I cannot do all that many thingswell and most things I cannot do at all. But we all have our gifts.

As talented as the great theoretical physicist was, even AlbertEinstein experienced feelings of inadequacy. In 1948 Einstein wasoffered the first presidency of the new nation of Israel. He turned itdown with this statement: "I am deeply moved by the offer from ourState of Israel [to serve as President], and at once saddened andashamed that I cannot accept it. All my life I have dealt withobjective matters, hence I lack both the natural aptitude and theexperience to deal properly with people and to exercise officialfunctions. For these reasons alone I should be unsuited to fulfill theduties of that high office...." (The Einstein Scrapbook, s HopkinsUniversity Press, 2002)

Dr. Einstein knew plenty about the nature of the universe, but thiswise and insightful man also knew that he lacked the necessarypolitical skill for such a demanding position. Is there really anyshame in knowing our limitations? He focused on that which he did welland the world is the better for it.

You may or may not recognize it, but you have the capacity to do somethings well. In fact, very well. Few of us will ever be Einsteins, butwe can still contribute meaningfully to life. And when we know what itis we can do and decide to do that particular thing, we just might discover we are happy.

Do you spend a lot of time feeling anxious and stressed?Does your body have it's own way of tightening?Do your shoulders feel tense and hard? Maintaining this state for periods of time can do all kinds of unpleasant things to your mind and your body.

It's essential that you relax and take care of yourself. Here's how. Have you ever watched a baby sleep? Babiesbreathe in and out, with their tummy muscles. As adults,we hold our tummies in, focused on that perfect figure, But, brathing slowly, from your tummy, is the first step to total relaxation.

With that in mind, try this simple escape. Find a comfortable chairin a quiet place and just breathe, in and out, like a sleeping baby ora confident adult. Notice the rhythm of your breathing, Shun awayother thoughts. Within two minutes your shoulders will relax, the anxiousness will subside and you will feel the stress leave your body. And, all you had to do was breathe like a baby.

Give yourself a moment of peace. Let all the thoughts and sensations come, and then just as quickly let them flow on past.

Stop holding so tightly to the confusion that's around you. Relax and enjoy a moment of peace.

Visualize a brilliant, refreshing peace, easily and naturally flowing out from within you. And you'll experience that peace in abundance as it surely fills your world.

Enjoy a sense of peace by being that sense of peace. Allow your life to embody the calmness and serenity of the peaceful person you truly are.

The peace you have to give will never run out. Sending it outward serves to make it even stronger.

Be the peace you seek to know. And know the power that peace can bring.
