ABOUT THIS WORKSHOP

This workshop will cover the basic elements of B.F.Skinner's

analysis of verbal behavior as a conceptual basis for language

assessment and intervention for children with autism.

The first day will focus on language assessment and beginning a

language intervention program for a child with autism who has a

vocabulary of less than 50 words or signs. Topics will include

early mand training, vocal development through mand frames,

automatic and direct reinforcement procedures, and echoic training

procedures. In addition, information on procedures for teaching

tacts, receptive language and matching to sample will be presented.

The second and third day of the workshop will focus on more advanced

skills such as advanced manding, intraverbal and receptive feature,

function and class training (listener skills), beginning sentences,

the use of reading as a teaching tool, and analyses of specific

learner problems. A new sequence (curriculum) of these advanced

verbal skills will be presented.

Additional topics discussed over the three-day workshop will include

staff training, behavior problems, vocal development, classroom

design, IEP's, augmentative communication, inclusion, peer

interaction, self-stimulation, common teaching errors and the power

of Behavior Analysis as an ongoing tool to guide the intervention
