EDEN II PROGRAMS SUMMER INSTITUTE TRAINING SERIES

Utilizing scientifically validated treatment procedures, Eden II

Programs has been a leader in the effective intervention and

education of individuals with autism over the past 29 years. In an

effort to disseminate sound information about autism spectrum

disorders and provide training and support, Eden II Programs and The

Genesis School will offer the following seminars. These seminars are

designed to assist educators, psychologists, specialty area teachers

and parents develop more effective educational programs for

individuals affected by autism. Registration and check in for each

seminar is from 8:30-9:00 a.m. Each seminar runs from 9:00-3:00 p.m.

STATEN ISLAND INSTITUTE SCHEDULE

August 15-18, 2005 • 8:30 a.m.-9:00 a.m.—Check In • 9:00 a.m.—3:00

1. Monday, August 15th

Key Components of a Residential Setting

This workshop will review the key components necessary to ensure

quality services are offered in group homes for individuals with

autism. Staffing plans, activity schedules, physical set-up, and

other areas will be discussed in detail. Standards for clinical

services/care, and the role of various team members in meeting these

standards, will be presented. Methods for family members to ensure

quality of life for their son/daughter/sibling, and practical

strategies for working with the program/agency to develop a safe and

happy home for their family member will be provided.

2. Tuesday, August

16th

Strategies for promoting SPEECH, LANGUAGE, AND COMMUNICATION IN

CHILDREN WITH AUTISM SPECTRUM DISORDER

This workshop will review the impact of autism on speech, language

and communication, and discuss methods of intervention. Incidental

teaching, scripts, and augmentative communication systems will be

discussed.

3. Wednesday, August 17th

Enhancing play and recreation skills

This workshop will provide an overview of social skills and play

skills in individuals with autism. A primary focus will be on

strategies to address deficit areas in social reciprocity and peer

interaction as well as the development of play skills. Recreation and

leisure skills for individuals with autism will be discussed as they

relate to the quality of life and the person with autism as well as

the family.

4. Thursday, August 18th

MANAGING AND REDUCING Challenging behavior in community

SETTINGS

Individuals with autism will frequently exhibit a range of

challenging behavior. These behaviors are often difficult to treat

when in community settings. This workshop will first discuss the

theories and methods behind treating challenging behavior in general.

This will include conducting a functional assessment, developing

reinforcement strategies and function-based reactive procedures. The

workshop will then cover aspects of treatment specific to community

settings including issues related to generalization, crisis

management, systematic desensitization, shadowing, video modeling,

and activity schedules.

5. Monday, August 22nd

CLASSROOM MANAGEMENT SKILLS

This workshop explores numerous guidelines/approaches to proactively

manage behavior in a classroom setting. Strategies to assist in

identifying an implementing motivational systems appropriate to a

classroom setting, increasing student initiations, organizing

effective group instruction, modifying curricular, instructional, and

environmental features, and identifying behaviors/dynamics early and

responding proactively. Token systems, behavior contracts, and other

group-based interventions are highlighted, along with strategies for

maximizing appropriate behaviors during less structured periods.

6. Tuesday, August

23rd

Advanced social skills for individuals with asd

This workshop will discuss a variety of innovative strategies that

have been successful for improving social skills in children with

autism. Specific strategies to be discussed will include topics such

as: the use of behavioral rehearsal, role playing, using video

modeling and rehearsal, and conducting ABC analyses of social

situations.

7. Wednesday, August 24th

Conducting a functional behavior assessment

Children with autism will frequently exhibit a range of challenging

behavior. The first step in designing an effective treatment for

challenging behavior is to conduct a functional behavior assessment

(FBA). It is from the information gathered through an FBA that you

can determine why the individual engages in challenging behavior. A

function-based treatment program can then be developed. In this

workshop, the speaker will present the audience with the theory

behind conducting an FBA. The audience will then be presented with a

number of methods for conducting an FBA and will learn how to

interpret the data gathered from an FBA. The workshop will conclude

with information on how to transform your information from your FBA

into an effective treatment.

8. Thursday, August 25th

Including a child with asd: a recipe for success

This workshop will review roles and responsibilities of each of the

members of the inclusion team. Specific strategies for behavioral

assessment and intervention will be discussed. An overview will be

provided of some of the academic challenges faced by learners with

autism and specific accommodations and modifications that may be

beneficial. In addition, this workshop will focus on improving social

skills and increasing appropriate social language in the inclusion

setting. Specific skills such as developing friendships, and issues

related to teasing and bullying will also be discussed.

9. Friday, August 26th

The role of the autism consultant: A-z

This workshop will focus on the many roles and responsibilities of a

consultant as well as specific areas that the consultant should be

focused on. Sample individual cases will be shared and sample reports

will be provided for discussion. Specific topics to be covered will

include but are not limited to: conducting functional behavioral

assessments, developing a behavior intervention plan, team dynamics

and how to get the most out of the team, involving the family and

student in the process, conducting observations and providing

recommendations, developing student transition plans, one time

consultation vs. ongoing consultation, and shifting responsibility

from the consultant to the school district systematically (fading

consultation services).

From Verrazano Bridge: Staten Island Expressway (278) to 440N.,

Bayonne Bridge Exit. (This exit follows the Victory Blvd. Exit.) Take

440N ( Luther King Expressway) to the last exit before the

Bayonne Bridge, which will be the Richmond Terrace Exit. Take this

exit and turn right at stop sign. Go 2 blocks to St. and turn

right. Follow to Granite Ave. (3 blocks). Turn right on

Granite Ave. Continue on Granite Avenue pass the Eden II building

over small bridge to Richmond Terrace and continue for two blocks to

Avenue. Turn left onto Avenue. Eden II is at the end

of the street on the right.

From Goethals Bridge: Take Exit 13 of the New Jersey Turnpike. Cross

Goethals Bridge to Staten Island and proceed on S.I. Expressway. Take

440N., Bayonne Bridge exit. Take 440N ( Luther King Expressway)

to the last exit before the Bayonne Bridge-which will be the Richmond

Terrace Exit. Take this exit and turn right at stop sign. Go 2 blocks

to St. and turn right. Follow St. to Granite Ave. (3

blocks). Turn right on Granite Ave. Continue on Granite Avenue pass

the Eden II building over small bridge to Richmond Terrace and

continue for two blocks to Avenue. Turn left onto

Avenue. Eden II is at the end of the street on the right.

From Outerbridge Crossing: Take 440N (stay right) off the bridge.

Exit towards Verrazano Bridge- 287 East. Exit at Bayonne Bridge,

440N. Exit. Take last exit before Bayonne Bridge (Richmond Terrace).

Follow directions above.

From Bayonne Bridge: Take first exit off bridge. Take a left on

Morningstar Road. Right on Ave. and then a right on Granite

Ave. Follow directions above.
