question for Language for Learning/Distar Language users

In its earliest stages, these programs teach an odd response to the question

" What is this? " (answer: " This is a ___ " instead of " It is " or " That is " ). Is

there some later step in the program that would be undermined if I taught the

more natural " It is " or " That is " instead?
