Guest guest
Well, when I was a " baby " nurse....over a decade ago, we did perform amniotomy. I learned fast that when you do it..you will get a nice variable when the bag breaks and the head moves down. I also learned very quickly that if you screw a FSE on through the membranes, you produced a nice slow leak that produced NO decel at all. Then, it became a nursing no-no. So we leave it alone....there are still amnicots out there though. Lori
Guest guest
Yes, Kathy, at my hospital RN's are allowed to rupture membranes, apply internal electrodes and intrauterine pressure catheters. I know this is unusual even for TX. We called state board and AWHONN and they agreed that with " extra training " and documentation of such training at least yearly, it was OK. , TX

Guest guest
At the hospital I work at we, too rupture membranes. Like , we have to have documentation of extra training as well as annual competencies for IUPC and FECG placement. We do have a standardized procedure for the AROM, that the state of California says you need to do this kind of thing. I have never seen a case of a prolapsed cord when a nurse has done the AROM, but I have seen quite a few when it is done by the MD. I think that is because as part of our standardized procedure, the RN cannot do the amniotomy unless the presenting part is at a 0 or + station. We have MDs who do it at - stations with unengaged presenting parts. Sylvia

Guest guest
Hi All, Since the research proved that AROM were more likely to have fetal distress We have stopped, unless used to augment labour (not often) or induce in post mature, very favourable Love Diane
