A very close friend recently revealed the details of how she had been sexually abused by her oldest brother and some of his friends when we were about 9. I feel sick to my stomach every time I think about it. She too was affected for years by what had happened to her, and went through a series of relationships with men who treated her very poorly. She went for counselling for years and thank heavens is OK now. She has forgiven her brother and he has apologized - although I think he hasn't really changed. He has been charged twice for assaulting girlfriends (and he broke another girlfriend's jaw about 12 years ago but unfortunately she did not press charges). He is just going to trial on the 2nd charge so hopefully they lock him up this time. It is an amazing thing how abuse received as a child leaves such a scar that one's whole life is ultimately affected by it. I've been fortunate enough to get lots of counseling but even then I made lots of mistakes in terms of choosing partners.
