Guest guest
Dawn and group, My suggestion is that your find the best pediatric neurologist you can find and give him/her your son's history along with your concerns. My son took Lamictal for several years and he had no side effects whatever. ,Colin P's mom [ ] Alittle off topic, learning & meds & seizures Hi everyone, I need some help. I will give alittle history about my almost 5 yr. old son. We have been doing a VB program since he was 2 1/2 yrs. old. My son is nonvocal, asd child. He has huge fine and large motor issues and seems almost puppetry in gait when walking. I have had my son to 3 neurologists (these past 2 1/2 years) and had another complete workup this past August. When he was two and almost 4 1/2 he had a drop attack seizure. Like I said all tests came back normal (EEG, 24 hour EEG, MRI, cat scan. and blood). In his home program he wasn't making much progress (basically maintaining) for the past year. However, these past 3 months he is making a lot of progress again. However, I did do some " housecleaning " on my team and changed consultants. He is a signing child and like I said he has no words, however he has a few vowel sounds and tries to talk so hard for the past two years. One thing I am very fortunate about is he is very social and loving little guy. This is my concern. My son 3 weeks ago had a gran mal seizure that lasted about 2 minutes and then he fell asleep. I took him to the ER and they did a work up on him. Everything came back normal. However, they didn't do an EEG. This past Saturday he had another gran mal seizure that was even more scary for my husband and me. He wet his pants and had Todd's syndrome for about an hour afterwards. We once again took him to the ER and everything came back normal. I ask for an EEG but they said my neurologist needed to order that and they couldn't get a hold of him. We will be seeing the neurologist this coming Friday. The doc said we need to put him on anti-seizure meds. This scares me because I have been reading about the side effects and the most alarming to me is the meds could cause slow learning. We are finally making great gains in our program and I don't want to hurt my son's already cognitive problems. Does anyone have experience with this? I sure could use some help right now. These seizures are sure terrifying however the doc has said they won't destroy brain cells. I disagree with this. My son couldn't move for almost an hour after his 2nd seizure. If it is no big deal to his brain why would he have that kind of side effect? Feel free to e-mail me off list at _Scissors0@..._ (mailto:Scissors0@...) Thanks in advance for your help and sorry for the off topic question. Dawn
