The Greater Rochester Chapter of S.A.F.E

is proud to present

TEACHING VERBAL BEHAVIOR

IN THE CLASSROOM:

AN OVERVIEW

Using the analysis of language as a behavior that is under the influence of the

principles of operant conditioning provides a viable model for helping children

with language deficits. Research has demonstrated that the application of these

principles leads to the development of functional communication skills,

reduction in problem behavior, and an increase in social initiations.

Presenter: M. Caffrey, M.Ed., completed an undergraduate degree in

Education from Arizona State University and a Masters degree in Education from

Georgian Court College, where he was awarded the Project of Distinction for his

work on training paraprofessionals to work with children with autism. In

addition, he completed graduate coursework in behavior analysis from Penn State

University and is now finishing the requirements leading to certification as a

behavior analyst.

This workshop will illustrate through extensive use of video how the principles

of ABA that emphasize the teaching of verbal behavior are being applied

effectively in classroom settings to teach children with autism language and

other important skills. Specifically, participants will learn strategies to:

v Build rapport with the learner

v Select the most appropriate form of communication for a child

v Capture and contrive motivation

v Teach functional communication skills (manding)

v Utilize behavioral principles to reduce and manage problem behavior

v Provide individual and group instruction in the natural environment

(NET)

v Transition learners from NET to intensive teaching (DTT)

v Develop basic teaching templates for early, intermediate, and advanced

learners

Educational Support is our goal. Greater Rochester SAFE is the place to find

out how to make next week BETTER for everyone involved! Knowledge is the key to

success.
