I didn't check this out on the snopes web site, but if it is true we should all heed the warning. Something with a common denominator is causing a lot of cancer. If anyone knows if this is the truth, please let me know. - Gayle

No plastics in micro No water bottles in freezer. No plastic wrap in micro s Hopkins has recently sent this out in their newsletters worth noting... This information is being circulated at Walter Army Medical Center. Dioxin Carcinogens cause cancer, especially breast cancer. Don't freeze your plastic water bottles with water as this also releases dioxins in the plastic. Dr. Fujimoto from Castle hospital was on a TV program explaining this health hazard. (He is the manager of the Wellness Program at the hospital.) He was talking about dioxins and how bad they are for us. He said that we should not be heating our food in the microwave using plastic containers.

This applies to foods that contain fat. He said that the combination of fat, high heat and plastics releases dioxins into the food and ultimately into the cells of the body. Dioxins are carcinogens and highly toxic to the cells of our bodies. Instead, he recommends using glass, Corning Ware, or ceramic containers for heating food. You get the same results, without the dioxins.

So such things as TV dinners, instant ramen and soups, etc., should be removed from the container and heated in something else. Paper isn't bad but you don't know what is in the paper. It's just safer to use tempered glass, Corning Ware, etc. He said we might remember when some of the fast food restaurants moved away from the foam containers to paper. The dioxin problem is one of the reasons.

To add to this, Saran wrap placed over foods as they are nuked, with the high heat, actually drips poisonous toxins into the food, use paper towels.

Barb:

The problem with this message is that most

plastics are not going to be a problem, but that plastics that are meant to be

disposable, such as pre-packaged water bottles, MIGHT be a problem. Cheap

water bottles are not meant to be re-used like traditional “plasticware”

(Tupperware, Ziploc containers, and the like); they are single-serving only.

If you’ve ever reused a regular water bottle, like from Evian for

example, you’ll notice after a week or so the water you refill it with

starts to taste like plastic. This is an obvious sign that it’s

starting to oxidize (as it was purposefully made to bio-degrade!). I don’t

know if they’ve proven this to be cancer-causing or not, but I know they

HAVE proven that this releases phytoestrogens from the bottle. I think

the way to tell is by the number in the recycle triangle on the side…if I

remember correctly, numbers 3 and 6 are the most common single-serving ones

that should be tossed regularly. Although I think it should be fairly

obvious as to what items are “single-serving only” anyway.

The plastic trays and Styrofoam that microwavable meals come in are meant to be

OK for one time use, but you’ll notice they tell you right in the

packaging not to reuse.
