Well, my friend, you are a member of this list also, and *everyone's*

opinion is important. This issue seems more an issue of semantics--we are

all generations here, with lots of training background differences. In other

countries, " our " way of doing things may be considered barbaric. I saw in

the past the major differences in health care overall when my grandfather

was dying from Pagett's disease 3 yrs ago. He lived in Great Britain, and

while their National Health system had it's great points, there were many

things not done, either because the technology wasn't there, or the wait was

extensive, or the coverage wasn't there. In this country, for him at least,

his options would have been more varied. Would he have lived? Don't know,

but I always wonder.

I have had a tremendous indignation about some of the terms that have

changed, mostly, as has been mentioned, due to insurance influences.

Unfortunately, the insurance companies control a lot of what we can do in

health care. I went into nursing to try to make a difference in people's

lives--hopefully I still do that, even though a lot of my time is spent

battling insurance companies to get approved what a

patient/client/consumer/*individual* needs.

Nursing is full of controversy---lots of different opinions, all of value.

Feel free to lurk, since you must do what you are most comfortable with. The

list is to talk and exchange ideas, not to stress anyone out in any way.

Enjoy it for what it can offer you.

But we all will miss your insight if you just

Cherub..you are not out of line, or TOO OLD (class of " 78 myself) We were just

of the last generation of nursing education where nursing was still an

art..caring for the whole person, and having the time and resources available

to do so..you know the time before medicare reform and DRG's...today it's all

just a business, whether it's the Hospital, the HMO or the Doc's trying to

make money...we just do the best we can to bring the human touch to our

patients..despite heavier loads, less staff and sicker patients..and I love my

job..more specifically..I love my patients and am honored to be part of their

special " birth " days!!! Lori in Orlando

Well, thank you, even if I am only list mommy by default when we started on

Onelist! :)

I am so proud of this list though--we have a whole lot of interaction, with

lots of good information, and everyone is great! It's one of my favorite

lists, and I always look forward to new posts.

I agree. And I prefer the term patient also. Maybe it's because lawyers have

clients!

I agree also. When I went back to school for my BSN, they told us to use the

word " client " , most of us squaked and insisted on a reason why, actually we

asked for " rationale " teehee.

They replied that as " professional nurses " which we bachelor prepared nurses

would be, we had a relationship with the " patient " / " client " as a care

provider. I quickly added that int he hospital, they were " contracting " for

care with the hospital and not with me as an individual. If I were in private

practice I would see nothing wrong with calling the patient a client, as I

would be hired by them to provide services. Since I am hired by the hospital

and not by t he individual himself, I do not feel that they are MY clients,

instead I feel they are the hospital's clients, therefore...my patient. Do

you see my point?

Thanks Jeanine

Controversy is what loops are all about, opinions, feelings and so on. If the

loop doesn't want controversy....I'm out!!!

I love controversy...just remember nothing is a personal attack! No flames

allowed!
