Hi all,

Many times I have heard say don't do the Work on an addiction

(smoking, drinking, drugs etc.) do the Work on the thought which just

preceeds the glass of whiskey, the hit of cocaine or the cigarette.

It's that thought which you are trying to shut down with the alcohol,

cocaine or nicotine. Here is where an understanding of the way our

experience is created (Think, Feel, Act, Have) can be very useful. A

stressful thought arises in my mind, I start to feel bad, to remove

that feeling I smoke, drink or take drugs and I have a miserable

life. So the addiction is really just the effect of believing an

unquestioned thought, and not the correct point for Inquiry. What I

need to do the Work on is the thought which is causing the addictive

behaviour.

Now that thought which I am trying to shut down, may be about my

mother, my brother, my work situation or whatever. So that is why

often says to addicts to do the Work on mother, brother etc.

because when I undo those stressful thoughts which are causing my

addiction my addictive behaviour will automatically cease.
