Hello All,

Acually this is a email I have set up at work...so when you got us you got

all of us...There are 13 of us girls that work here at St. Joes OB dept in

sboro Illinois. My name is LPN,CD...plus you may also talk

with..Dorothy RNC, Betty RN, RN, Kathy RN, RN,CLC, Sandy RNC,

Margie RN, Kira RN BSN, LPN, Machelle LPN,CD, LPN and Angie LPN.

We are a small hospital and we all believe in the more natural..low

intervention delivies. Two of us have become Certified Doulas (CD) Most of

us have been thur the doula class...but have decided not to be certified.

Here at St.Joes we do not do epidurals and most of the time are able to give

one on one care. We love our philosphy and are glad to be a part of the

list.

Thanks

The OB gals of SJMH

place like that..many moons ago....and all the patients did well....do any of

your VIP patients get epidurals? The only ones who got them at my old

hospital were Dr. wives.....Lori in Fla.

Wow! A *big* bunch joining at once! :)

Welcome to all of you, and feel free for any one of you to jump right into a

discussion, or start a new one! I know we have at least one other doula here

(right, Marna? :)) and really enjoy everyone's input. We all come from

different maternal/child health areas--L & D, NICU, post partum, high risk,

and home care (maternal/child).

Hey, this also answers the question that I think came up a few weeks ago

about whether there were any hospitals who utilized LPN's in L & D still!

Terrific!

Thank you for accepting me on your list, even though I'm a nursing assistant,

I feel very priviledged to be working with OB and PP nurses. I love my job

and assisting the nurses on the day shift. I love the 'hands on' I get to

give as a nursing assistant, I'll probably always be one. I get many people

who want me to continue my education and become a nurse, but frankly I'm very

happy where I am. I work part-time and do some home care on the side.

Thanks again for taking me on the list. I hope I can contribute to the

circle.

Diane~

It's nice to hear someone who is happy with their job!

Be proud of that...I would like to hear what all you do as a Nurse Assistant.

We don't have any in our department but I think we could really benefit from

them.

~,

I actually love to do some of the post-partum teaching, you know, diapers,

bath, circ care and general newborn care. I have the opportunity to take the

time to demonstrate some of these things, where as the RN's are so tied up

doing their own nursing duties, they are too rushed to stop and do some of

these otherwise, time consuming duties. They are more concerned with

teaching the medical precautions and doing the discharge teaching.

I have gone down to the L & D and assisted when things were absolutely crazy, I

took some coarses in OB tech, but haven't actually persued it because that

suiting up and helping with instraments makes me claustrophobic.

The best part of the job is the families, they're usually adorable!

Hello, everyone!! My name is Debbie. I'm a nurse at University of land

Hospital. Currently i'm in the transplant field, primarily kidney, pancreas,

and liver. However, my sole reason for becoming a nurse was to be a labor

and delivery nurse. I had an interview last week, and was told that I would

know something by August 2nd. Even though this is my 'dream job' , I'm

feeling some ambivalence about making the move. One of the things that I love

about my current position is the ability to really get to know my patients.

Seeing return patients can be frustrating, but it also has its rewards. One

of the things that I realized when I did a share day on the L & D unit was that

the patients come in to have their baby, then move to the post-partum unit

before being discharged. The opportunity to really get to know them isn't

there, at least from what I viewed in the few short hours that I was there.

It seems that there is a smaller nurse-patient ratio in L & D, so maybe you

don't need as many hours with each patient to become familiar with them.

Sorry for rambling on. I would be interested in talking to other L & D nurses

and hearing about the rewards of the job. At the same time, I would also

like to know what you DISLIKE about L & D.

Hi Debbie,

I can certainly understand your concerns. My feeling is that while as an L & D

nurse, you wont have much longevity in your patient contact, take into

consideration that you are a laboring woman's angel, and chances are very

good, that your name will be entered in many many baby books, not to mention

these mom's memories. Speaking as a mom, I can tell you every one of my

labor nurses names, and would recognize them in a minute. (I've had 4!)

You are to be applauded for taking the human side of your profession so

seriously, I think that you would make a wonderful L & D nurse, go for

it!!!!!!

Good luck and keep us posted!

Debbie...

Maybe you should also ask people why they STAY in OB. The reasons would be

very interesting! I enjoy meeting and working with the people (very

challenging) but I really like the autonomy of OB nursing. I don't know of

many departments where you can do so much and only call the doctor in at the

last minute. Of course that all depends on what all is going on but it is

fun to be so independent.

Good luck to you.

Hi Debbie,

I have been in Maternal Child Health for 14 years. The first year I

spent in postpartum, the next two years I was in the nursery/NICU and

the rest have been in L & D (my absolute love!). I think that there are

ways to establish a bond with your laboring patient and get to know them

in a quicker and more intimate way than you may have been exposed in the

time youspent there. I do see some nurses, however, who don't bother to

get to know their patients. I found that on postpartum (an maybe this is

just where I work) I didn't have as much time to get to know the patient

and bond with her. After all, I not only had her and her baby to care

for, I also had 3 more couplets too. And they all needed my time. I also

had to try to establish a bond with the numerous family members and

friends for each of these patients since we have pretty liberal visiting

hours/rules. It is kind of impossible to bond with your patient when

there are tons of visitors too and they basically just want to see the

new baby. The NICU was a good place to get to know the parents too since

the nurse:patient ratio is less (like L & D). L & D can be a highly

stressful area, but overall I love it!

Hello,

My name is (27years old) and I'm not sure I am qualified to be on this

list, I am trusting you will all

let me know.

I have always dreamed of being either an OB/LD or NICU nurse, I am planning on

starting my nursing

education in the fall of 2000. Lately I have been leaning towards becoming a

midwife. I am unsure

exactly which path I want to take, that brings me to this list.

I am hoping to be able to " hang out " here with you all and learn much from your

experiences and ask questions

of you all when I need to.

I am also a fulltime stay at home mom to 7 precious children ages 2 - 11 (3 his,

3

mine & one our bio). I am

worried about becoming burned out on care giving, as I hear many nurses

experience. I am also concerned with

balancing my family and my education and eventual career.

If you all feel I don't belong here, please let me know, otherwise I look

forward

to meeting you all.

Thanks,

in KY

My name is Sandy and I have been a nurse for 25 years with a strong emphasis

in Emergency and Obstetrical nursing. At present I am 15 hours away from

obtaining my paralegal certificate and would like to work as a nurse

paralegal for med-mal attorneys(defense of course). Right now I work in Labor

and Delivery in two different hospitals, so have lots of experiences to share.

They said she had failed to respond to her confirmation letter. So I had

them re-send it. (I had to respond twice using her name before they finally

accepted it)

Welcome, Sandy, or welcome back? It seems your e mail address is familiar to

me, but maybe it's not from here.

I look forward to hearing some of your experiences!

Ah ha! *That's* why her email addy sounded familiar! :)

I'm so glad she finally got here!

I'm sorry there was such a problem--I really can't figure out why, though.

Must be some kind of Onelist glitch.
