Guest guest
Hi Everyone, I want to thank everyone for your thoughts and prayers for my family today, as my grandson, Aidan, had his external heart surgery. They successfully removed the stitches from his aorta and took his heart out to repair the holes. One hole was the size of a dime and the second hole was only slightly smaller than that. Right now, they have him totally sedated and on a ventilator. Also, they inserted a pacemaker to try to regulate his heart beat because currently it is very irregular. In four days, they will attempt to remove the pacemaker, but if his heart does not beat correctly, they will have to permanantly put a pacemaker in. Also, because Aidan's surgery was put off for so long, (1 1/2 years) he has extensive heart damage because his heart is so enlarged. Question: For those of you who have children who have had heart surgery, did your children have to have a pacemaker those first few days? And, if so, do they have one now? Thanks everyone! Guest guest
I put him on the prayer list at my church on Sunday. Several of our deacons get together during church and pray specifically for requests like this one. I'm glad the surgery went well and hope Aidan is out of the woods soon. A. Guest guest
Kristy, Happy to hear everything and everyone is fine!!! From my experience, they will keep the pacemaker to help his heart have stronger and more efficinet heart beats. For everything that little Aiden has been through, this isn't going to be much of a problem if he has to keep it. Technology has advanced so much. My friend's daughter with DS has one and she does well. With the occasional battery change and upgrade to a different generator, as she grows, Reahan does well. Happy to hear everything went well. Guest guest
Hi Kristy, had heart surgery almost 3 years ago. And yes she did have a pacemaker but after her heart started to beat irregular. It never did go back to normally beat so they did implant one in her abdomen. If it wasn't for the pacemaker she would not be here today. We do have monthly checks over the phone and then once every 6 months we go into the cardiac unit to adjust it if they need to because of her growing. She is doing wonderful with it. Guest guest
Thank you Norma for the input. It does look as though Aidan will have to have the pacemaker. He just has too much scar tissue on the nerve that sends the signal to the heart to beat. I know it isn't a horrible thing to have the pacemaker, it is just that my son was hoping this was going to be his last surgery, and if he has the pacemaker, he will have to have continueal surgeries. This is Aidan's 7th surgery in his young 2 year old life! But, as I told my son, at least we will know that his heart has a better chance to keep beating with the pacemaker in place! Thanks, Kristy Norma Kantola wrote: Hi Kristy, had heart surgery almost 3 years ago. And yes she did have a pacemaker but after her heart started to beat irregular.
