Pre-Conference Seminar March 22 Building Diagnostics: How Buildings work, and How to Investigate Them When They Don't Presented by: Brad Turk This full day seminar will cover the basic principles of how buildings work: how energy, air, and pollutants flow in buildings and the materials, equipment, and assemblies often found in them. The session will then discuss how these basic principles are used to investigate and diagnose building problems. The program features Brad Turk of Environmental Building Sciences, Inc., a nationally recognized building scientist from Santa Fe, New Mexico. More Keynote Presentation March 23 Building For the Environmentally Sensitive Presented by Dr. Virginia Salares The keynote presentation will focus on an aspect of building construction not often addressed: “Building for the Environmentally Sensitive”. The session opens with an introduction by Dr. Virginia Salares, a former senior researcher for the Canada Housing and Mortgage Corporation and a leading indoor air quality expert. Dr. Salares will discuss construction strategies that address the health needs of sensitive populations, including individuals with asthma and other lung diseases, immune system deficiencies, the young and the elderly, and sensitivities to chemical exposures. A responder panel of medical and technical experts will identify the barriers and challenges of implementing the recommended building practices and brainstorm strategies to overcome them. There will be an opportunity to ask questions of the keynote presenter and the responder panel.
