Guest guest
I have seen lot of cosmetics products available in the market containing c12-c15 alkyl bezoate rawmaterials. How it is manufactured? What is the function of this rawmaterial in creams and lotions? Is it acting as preservative also? Other than cream and lotion can it be used for other hair care and soap products? Can any body answer this question?
Guest guest
>I have seen lot of cosmetics products available in the market >containing c12-c15 alkyl bezoate rawmaterials. This is probably one of the best selling emollient esters of all time. And you notice, when you see this ester on an ingredient declaration, it's very high in the ingredient list. C12-15 Alkyl Benzoate is being used as a functional ingredient, not for label claim. >How it is manufactured? The originally, this material was patented by Finetex (U.S. Patent Nos. 4,275,222 4,278,655 4,293,544 4,322,545 4,323,694) and sold under the trade name Finsolv TN. Since the patents have expired, C12-15 Alkyl Benzoate is sold under other trade names. >What is the function of this rawmaterial in >creams and lotions? C12-15 Alkyl Benzoate " a unique non-toxic, non-irritating, non-sensitizing and non-comedogenic, water insoluble, readily emulsifiable ester, possesses the following unexpected properties and attributes: 1. imparts a dry lubricating feel in the presence of large amounts of mineral oil or petrolatum ( " deoils " mineral oil and " degreases " petrolatum) 2. superior solubilizer of lipophilic cosmetic raw materials, especially sunscreen agents and volatile silicones 3. high positive spreading coefficient 4. anti-tack agent, especially in antiperspirant formulations 5. wetting agent and auxiliary suspending agent for water insoluble powdered products 6. stable to hydrolysis within pH range of about 2-12. " http://www.finetexinc.com/Finsolv%20TN.html >Is it acting as preservative also? No. >Other than cream and lotion can it be used for other hair care and >soap products? Yes. According to the Finetex website, Finesolv TN is or can be used in *Sunscreens/Suntans *Deodorants/Antiperspirants *Emollient Creams *Hand & Body Creams & Lotions *Body & Massage Oils *Alcoholic Lotions *Cleansing Creams *Make-Ups & Nail Products *Foundation Lotions *Lipsticks/Lip Glosses/Lip Balms *Eye Make-Ups & Removers *Peelable Face Masks *Bath & After Bath Products *Shaving Preparations *Pre-Electric Shave Lotions *Colognes & Perfumes *Soaps, Combos, Syndets *Hair Care Products *Hair Dye Leveling Agent *Body & Baby Powders *Foot Care Products *After Shave Lotions/Balms Is there anything else that you would like to know? If you haven't guessed, I love this emollient. The only problem that I am aware of is it's INCI name " C12-15 Alkyl Benzoate " . It doesn't sound natural. I would have no problem using this raw material in a product for my personal use.. In fact, I have. Maurice ------------------------------------------------------- Maurice O. I have just started playing with it and like the feel of it very much. I had originally thought to make a sprayable lotion with this ester, but wonder if this would be the ingredient to use in a sprayable body oil with perhaps something like the fractionated coconut oil? Any thoughts? Thanks! Guest guest
Hi Angie, Have you tried the Sheer Moisture Spray by Nivea? It has the C12-C15 Alkyl Benzoate in it. It's a very nice feeling silky milky liquid lotion that absorbs right into your skin. I would love this lotion except that the fragrance sends me into uncontrollable sneezing fits. The ingredients are: Triple Purified Water, Mineral Oil, Glycerin, Dicaprylyl Ester, C12-C15 Alkyl Benzoate, Ceteareth-20, Glyceryl Sterate, Microcrysatlline Wax, Phenyl Trimethicone, Cetearyl Isononanoate, Shea Butter, Cetyl Palmitate, Cetearyl Alcohol, Ceteareth-12, Fragrance, EDTA, Sodium Hydroxide, DMDM Hydantoin, Phenoxyethanol. Hope this helps a little, AngiesHerbarie@... wrote: > In a message dated 8/28/02 7:24:37 PM Pacific Daylight Time, > maurice@... writes: > > > >>This is probably one of the best selling emollient esters of all time. >>And you notice, when you see this ester on an ingredient declaration, >>it's very high in the ingredient list. No, I have not tried the Nivea, but will have to check it out next time I get to the store. It sounds similar to what I am trying to come up with. I would like to use fractionated coconut oil (caprylic /capric triglyceride) instead of mineral oil. I would also like to omit the other ester (Dicaprylyl Ester) and Ceteareth 20---thinking the C12-15 alkyl benzoate would be sufficient and maybe use something like the PEG-60 glycerides or PEG-6 glycerides?? or polysorbate 20. I don't understand these two ingredients: Microcrysatlline Wax, Cetearyl Isononanoate?? The Phenyl Trimethicone is a silicone I guess, would it be comparable to dimethicone? The remainder of the ingredients I think I can figure out to work with or substitute. Any thoughts out there? Kind of a coincidence that this is an ester that I have been wanting to use and Maurice puts his stamp of approval on it---must be fate! I do think the C12-15 alkyl benzoate has alot of potential and my only concern as Maurice says, is that folks will see the name and think SYNTHETIC CHEMICAL. According to what I have read, however, it appears to be a very benign substance. I am curious though about the relationship to sodium benzoate (if only I knew my chemistry) and whether or not there would be any of the same characteristics. Thanks again, folks, for all the help! The Microcrysatlline Wax, Cetearyl Isononanoate and Phenyl Trimethicone are there for the feel. What we have in this Nivea product is a sprayable emulsion. The water phase is real simple: Water Glycerin The oil phase is composed of Mineral Oil Dicaprylyl Ester C12-C15 Alkyl Benzoate Microcrysatlline Wax Phenyl Trimethicone Cetearyl Isononanoate Shea Butter Cetyl Palmitate Cetearyl Alcohol Ceteareth-20 Glyceryl Stearate Ceteareth-12 Then we have the Fragrance followed by the preservatives EDTA DMDM Hydantoin Phenoxyethanol and the pH for some reason, is adjusted with Sodium Hydroxide. The emulsifiers, Ceteareth-20, Glyceryl Stearate and Ceteareth-12, are probably blended with the Cetearyl Alcohol. The required HLB for C12-C15 Alkyl Benzoate is 13 and the required HLB for Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride is 5. In the ideal world, you should blend the PEG-20 Almond Glycerides, PEG-60 Almond Glycerides or Polysorbate 20 with a lower HLB emulsifier. Could be fun. As already noted, C12-15 Alkyl Benzoate is on many ingredient lists. There is a whole segment of the population that are more focused on performance rather than " being natural " .
