Guest guest
Doctors are famous for blaming pain on things like being overweight. Mine told me a CPAP would bring my pain levels down. Instead, it has gone up from the pressure of the mask and headgear. I don't know anyone with fibro who has had gastric by-pass surgery, so I can't help you with that. It makes me think twice about doing having one, though. I have been considering it. It's just another severe physical trauma, so I can see why in theory it may make pain worse. Guest guest
Hi PL I have not had a gastric by pass but I am wondering if your pain increase is due to a decrease in the ability absorb your pain medicine. Also have you increased your activity level to fast? Just some thoughts Kaylene >I was wondering if anyone has experienced the problem I'm having. >I've been suffering from chronic pain for years (DDD, DJD, >Myofascial, Psoriatic Arthritis) and have gone from using Tylenol #3 >to Oxycontin and Vicoden to having to go on Kadian about 6 weeks >ago as pain increases. >For years my doctors told me that if I lost weight my pain levels >would decrease so last April I had the GBPass. However around 2 to 3 >months after the surgery the opposite occured-- my pain levels went >through the roof. It was as if when the weight came off at about 30 >pounds that the pain just kept increasing with each pound lost. ( I >have a great deal of muscle loss as well.) >The reason I am wondering if there is a correlation is because of an >off hand remark my Internist made. She said that she had 5 patients >who've had the GBPass and 3 of them have had an increase in pain. >I was wondering if anyone here had experienced this of have any >knowledge of this. >Thanks for taking the time to read this. >PL > > _________________________________________________________________ Working moms: Find helpful tips here on managing kids, home, work — and yourself. http://special.msn.com/msnbc/workingmom.armx
Guest guest
---PL, I have not had the bypass, but I have lost about 35-40 pound since June...and my chronic pain definately increased, even though everyone told me it should decrease due to less stress on my deformed spine. Sorry I am not much help...but hang in there...we are here for you Love and blessings, Lee
Guest guest
Lee Thank yo so much for getting back to me. there is something definitely going on that they have not done much research on. I went on a gastric by pass site and had a few people write saying it happened to them. Did you talk to your docotr/s about this issue? Guest guest
---PL, I have a guess about it (esp. in my case, but could apply to others) This is just my opinion.... I think my spine got used to/adjusted to the extra weight, and then when I lost alot of weight so quickly (the last 20 is not as easy...lol) and my center of gavity shifted back to more " normal " it caused my spine to shift further out of alignment (I have spondylolisthesis) but I think a body having to readjust quickly causes more pain...the weight went on slowly and the body adjusted accordingly, but when a drastic change happens the body can't compensate quickly enough...causing more pain until it can shift/adapt or what ever. This may or not make sense medically, but it was the only thing I could think of to explain my sharp increase in pain seemingly over night. I have not talked to the doctor about it...my mother (an RN) just keeps insisting to me that less weight is better for my back... Happy New Year!
