That which does not kill us makes us stranger.

At my new job I work with a guy whose 5 year old son is mildly

autistic. Problem he's currently facing is that the boy refuses to

defecate in the

toilet. They put " pull ups " on him, he does his business and then goes

back to underwear. He'll hold it to the point of constipation to keep

from

using the toilet. They've tried coaxing, bribery, just about

everything. Is this something you've heard of?

Can't help with the major problem (anybody else??) but I do note that

Merton said this before Trevor Goodchild (whoever he might be) did. And he

may not have invented it!

Wish I could help, Annie -

My son (Aspie) also had some odd bowel-related issues that have since faded,

but maybe not gone away. Both he and his NT sister have the tendency to

hold bowel movements for days - to the point of continuous discomfort

sometimes. With them, I think, it's more an issue of a) they waited too

long once; B) it hurt like heck when it finally came out, so they were sore

and reluctant at the next bowel movement; c) so they waited as long as they

could, had another difficult one; d) now the loop is sacred tradition - it

hurts, so they try to do it as seldom as possible, which makes it hurt more.

Also, my son for a period was terrorized by public restrooms because some of

them had hot air hand driers. Scared once by a noisy drier, he still

doesn't entirely trust them 6 years later. Maybe something similar is going

on there - bad, stressful experience on the toilet just keeps bringing up

the bad memories whenever he's " threatened " with the toilet. I don't mean

they actually threaten him, but I wouldn't be surprised if that's now how he

feels about it.

I know that, as an Aspie myself, there are some things I am unnaturally

afraid of and can't be reasoned with about. Just try talking me out of my

fear (yes, fear) of marshmallows. It makes absolutely no sense, but there's

no point in telling me that - they still creep me out completely. Easier to

work around if the fear is marshmallows; harder if it's toilets.

By the way, - nice to see the reference to Tom Merton. I would not be

at all surprised if Merton didn't have Aspergers, given his interests,

temperament, strengths and weaknesses.

An interesting idea. It might explain quite a bit that's always puzzled me

about Merton.
