Hey Kathy,

The food program director at my school didn't object at all to me sending organic milk to school with my son. Firstly when I met her (after my cutesy hubby warned her I was coming with a barrage of questions!), I discussed with her about food irradiation, what kind of food does she serve, what kind of milk does she distribute. Leading to my point- saying my son was on organic milk and I'd really like to see that continue even in school. She was absolutely fine with that and mentioned to me she'd love to introduce curriculum in the school about organic food and what that means. She hasn't "walked the talk" in introducing curriclum and has ignored what info I sent to school for her, so I think my general approach leading to the organic milk question really paved the way for getting what I wanted.

So I'm thinking you shouldn't have a problem at all sending milk to school. If you say it's organic from grass fed cows, blah blah, they shouldn't have a beef with it! I don't say it's raw milk, unfortunately enough- it would be terrific advertising, just because I don't want the food director (mistakenly) thinking she'd be responsible if my son did get sick from raw milk or even allowing it on the school premises, I really just want to stay under the radar. When it comes to my children, I just feel I have to be extra careful. I don't get to pay for the hot lunches minus milk, but that's fine with me.

Does the school provide lactose-free milk? If not, that would give you more ammo to "opting out" alltogether and sending milk for lunch.

I did see on the Stoney Field yogurt website that they are trying to mount a program of selling organic foods in schools. You might want to give that website a gander to see if it would help in approaching your school. For sure, I would give a call or visit the food program director head; that will send the message you are serious about your children having good stuff and that you will do what it takes to see to that. Then the head probably will let you have free rein, figuring (probably correctly! hee hee) it's easier to let you have your way than fight you later down the road. It's worth a shot! Let me know how it goes!

Still stealthy,

Sara
