Migraines?

I've been happily migraine free for a few months now until this week

when I started getting a little one Wednesday that turned into a full

blown screaming migraine today. I had to leave work early, and I

never leave work early.

Is there any holistic doctors in the cities that treat migraines? I

vowed about six months ago to NEVER take the IMITREX my doctor gave

me, and I think it's one of the reasons I've had a lot less migraines.

That stuff made me feel jittery and only felt like it was masking the

pain for a day or two, when it would come back full-force.

I think I know what foods to avoid, especially MSG, heavy salts,

ASPARTAME(yuck), nitrates, etc... but I think this one was brought on

by new tar that they were laying on 36, combined by the sun flickering

through the trees in my eyes.

If someone could give me suggestions on where to go, on list or off, I

would greatly appreciate it.

Thanks,

PS I know I shouldn't be staring at a computer screen but I had a

little nap and am feeling a lot better now.

: You already pegged it - the chemicals from the tar. In addition to

additives, fragrances [chemicals] are a real trigger for me. I cannot go into

stores that import a lot of clothing because they must use some kind of

pesticide fumigant. I have a fragrance-free house, I do not use any personal

cosmetics. I use Dr. Bronners Sal Suds for dishes and laundry, never use a

fabric softener, clean with baking soda, vinegar and hydrogen peroxide.

Sunlight just makes the pain worse but it is not a trigger for me. I wear

sunglasses when I am outside all the time, even when driving but mostly because

I can see better. June

Ever try a magnet necklace? My sister used to get at least one

migraine per week, but she hasn't had one since she started wearing a

magnet necklace. I bought one and it has helped clear up the head

aches I get too.

Also baltic sea amber necklaces help with headaches... as well as any aches and

pains really.  Great for arthritis too!  My 16 month old daughter wears hers

24/7 to help with teething pains.  The amber releases trace amounts of

analgesic oils when worn against the skin.  Just something else to try... I

know some people who wear them around their ankle or as bracelets if you're not

into necklaces :)

Hi Candace,

If you get migraines and have to vomit to feel better, I'd do two things if

I were you:

1. Keep track of EVERYTHING you've eaten and drunk within the previous 12,

up to 24 yours. Perhaps your migraines are food related.

2. If you don't get good answers by tracking your food reactions, take

ginger. Often the combination of intense headache and stomach upsets can be

stopped dead by the ginger. I like it in the candied form, but it is a bit on

the spicy side. If candied ginger doesn't work for you, buy the capsules at

the health food store.

I know my husband had debilitating migraines- and simply cut caffeine. The only

time he gets them is when he " splurges " and has something laced with caffeine.

Just a thought.

I've started using " real " ginger ale from an organic farm that supplies our

co-op.  I only have to drink  a little bit and it seems to help ALOT.

Thankfully, I don't get them so bad that I need to vomit as often as I used

to...  now, staying away from my triggers (all the typicals - chocolate,

processed foods, citrus, etc) has helped tremendously...  now I seem to only get

" hormonal " migraines... anywhere from 4 days before to 4 days into my menses.  I

figure I can handle a wicked headache if it's not so frequent...  <G>  Before I

started going more " traditional " in my foods, oy, the headaches were once or

twice a WEEK!...thats why the PCP gave me the imitrex..I just don't like to take

it unless it's one of those headaches that I feel like maybe I should go to the

E.R.  Thankfully, i've not had to do THAT since my Da was killed, January '07...

and that was complete and total stress
