I used to brush , but I haven't in ages. I'm wondering if I should start up again, though I'm not sure I remember how!

Re: the mall

,

We have had many "Mall Meltdowns" ourselves!!!! I have found that we limit the length of our visits and, at the first sign of sensory overload, we make a beeline for the exit. My husband has a lot of sensory issues himself (if not AS, but that is another issue !!) and he can't stand the mall. In fact, just this afternoon, we went to the mall to do some more shopping. We were there less then an hour. The kids were great, but my husband was a grouch and we left. Now, he is upstairs, complaining of a bad headache and sleeping it off. I think he just went in to sensory overload with all the noise, decorations, and crowd of the mall.

I am big in to avoiding meltdowns and tantrums at all costs. When we go to a crowded place, like a mall or street fair or amusement park, we watch very closely. The first sign of overstimulation (he will flap his hands, go very rigid, start to talk nonsense, that type of thing) we try to find a quiet spot and brush him. That helps some. If he stays escalated, we leave. If it is a place our NT daughter does not want to leave, one of us stays with her while the other takes out to the parking lot to walk around or something like that. A lot of times just getting away from the stimulation for a few minutes is enough, and he is able to go back in. This seems to work pretty well. We have gone from meltdowns/tantrums everytime we went somewhere a year ago to maybe 2 in the last month. Of course, OT, sensory diet, and maturity have helped too!!!

Do you brush ? We have had so much success with that. But, then again, 's biggest issues are sensory-related, so that makes sense.

Don't know what will happen when he is too big to carry. Just hope he has outgrown it even more by then!!!

Good luck!
