Thickening Alkaline Liquid Soaps

I have two suggestions for thickening alkaline liquid soaps.

The first suggestion is Natrosol 250 from Aqualon.

Properties of Solutions of Natrosol HEC

http://www.herc.com/aqualon/product_data/nat_hec_bro_soluprop.html

" Solutions of Natrosol undergo little viscosity change over the pH

range of 2 to 12. However, solutions possess the greatest viscosity

stability in the pH range of 6.5 to 8.0. Below pH 3, solutions may show

some drop in viscosity resulting from acid hydrolysis. This is common

to all water-soluble polysaccharide polymers, and is accelerated by

high temperature and high acidity. Under highly alkaline conditions,

some oxidative degradation may occur, accelerated by heat and light,

that will lower the viscosity. See Figure 11. "

The other suggestion is Structure 2001 (or 3001).

" STRUCTURE 2001 and 3001 are acrylic emulsion thickeners designed for

use in such hard-to-thicken formulations as hair dyes, relaxers,

permanent waving lotions, specialty gels, and depilatories. These

associative, alkali-swellable polymers are wellsuited for such

formulations because of their thickening efficiency over a broad

alkaline pH range and their stability in many aggressive environments. "

" While STRUCTURE thickeners achieve their high efficiency from the

physical association of pendant hydrophobes, it is exposure to alkaline

pHwhich first allows these polymers to swell and subsequently

associate. The STRUCTURE 2001/3001 series thickeners achieve very high,

stable viscosities from pH 6.5 through pH 13 and higher. "

Have fun.
