Easier.

An adult can (and will) reason his/her way through things, while children

only react. is 19 now, and whereas he'll never be Joe Sixpack, he's

been able to turn the resources of a young adult onto his various problems,

with good result so far. (All 19 year olds are only a rough draft, of

course.) I haven't seen one of those horrible out-of-control rages, for

example, for several years now. Thank God.

Hi Robin,

My AS son is 14 and things are much easier now. I think part of it is my learning to live my life around his needs making it easier or if he has just matured. Ther are a lot of things still such as not brushing his own teeth or hair. Still needs help with washing hair. The main thing is homeschooling. If we were still in the public school system, I'm sure I would have died by now. I'm serious. It literally made me sick. I am single and we live on his SSI and this decrease in income has been very hard but is worth it. He seems to want a little more socialization than in the past but this does not usually go well. I am afraid he will become depressed as many AS teens do because of this. He has mentioned driving a few times. YIKES! Not that he couldn't do it........ who would he drive over or into and where would he go? The years ahead sound like fun! He is a pleasant person to be around and has a great sense of humor and unless he is challenged by something there is no problem. Once in a while he will have an outburst but it is rare and does not last long as compared to the major housewrecking tantrums he had years ago. His meds are closely monitored ( Ritalin, and Clonidine ) and need frequent adjustment during rapid growth periods. Its very much worth the trouble. Yes it does get better.
