This is so wonderful! What a great accomplishment for you and Molly! I am so

glad that you shared this with us! Even though you do not have a child with MDS,

your caring heart for joining this group has put you into our family! And, we

all love to share the joys of our family!

WAY TO GO MOLLY!!!!!!!!

have a student with MDS. However, my almost-three-year-old daughter Molly

is Deaf, which has its own set of issues. Molly was diagnosed at birth as

having severe to profound deafness in both ears. As a result, she was

fitted with hearing aids when she was a couple of months old, and this past

March she received a cochlear implant. She has received speech

therapy/aural rehabilitation almost from day one. She has produced a few

words here and there, but is nowhere NEAR talking like a typical

three-year-old. We've been learning sign language and teaching it to her,

but that's moving at it's own pace, as well. The past few days, though,

Molly has started to say, " eat, eat " when she is hungry! At first, I

thought she was just making noises (she's nowhere near being mute; she just

does not have a lot of WORDS in her repertoire of sounds). BUT, I began to

notice that as she was saying, " eat, eat, " she was pushing me to get out of

my chair. When I would get up, she would follow me to the kitchen and to

her high chair! It's SO EXCITING to know that she is communicating WHAT she

wants/needs rather than just crying or fussing to let me know she

wants/needs SOMETHING!

Thank you for letting me share my joy at this accomplishment.

Pretty Cool!!! It's great that technology allows this to happen! Can't wait to

" hear " what else happens.

That is great !!!! I know just how you feel. It is a thrill for

to be able to " tell " me specific things although they are only word

approximations. He points to the cabinet where I keep the pretzels and says MA

PAPA....which is more pretzels. This is huge for him...almost like 2 words

together. We also use some signs...and another member recommended SIGNING TIME

tapes.

They are great!!! All my kids love to watch and sing with them...GREAT JOB

Molly!!!! LOL Ross Mom to 7, 3 MDS, and Kirk 18mos.
