February 16, 2010 Action Committee on the Health Effects of Mold, Microbes and Indoor Contaminants ACHEMMIC is a newly formed group consisting of physicians, scientists, researchers, indoor air quality experts, industrial hygienists, building engineers, advocates and others who are working together to promote the truth in health policy about the adverse effects of mold, microbes and indoor contaminants. A request for action letter was submitted today to EPA Administrator , GAO Acting Comptroller General Gene Dodaro, and Senior Advisor to the Senate Majority HELP Committee Meyers. ACHEMMIC is urging the EPA to adhere to GAO recommendations meant to provide consistent, accurate health advisories within the policies of all Federal agencies of the adverse health effects of mold and other microbial contaminants. The GAO audit of the public health threat was requested by the late Senator M Kennedy. In October of 2006, he requested that the Federal Government Accountability Office (GAO) perform an audit of the current scientific understanding of the health effects of mold. The result of the two year audit was a report issued in September of 2008 titled "Indoor Mold: Better Coordination of Research on Health Effects and More Consistent Guidance Would Improve Federal Efforts". The GAO deemed that the Federal Interagency Committee on Indoor Air Quality (CIAQ) would be the perfect organization to oversee this endeavor was carried out to ensure consistent government messaging in the name of public health. The CIAQ is governed by the EPA. ACHEMMIC encourages the EPA, CIAQ, and other Federal agencies to work together to fulfill the late Senator's lifetime dream of preventing and treating illness of all US citizens. Copies of the letter are being sent to individuals and organizations around the country, including numerous elected officials, government agencies, media outlets, medical organizations and others. The letter is also being posted on numerous websites and blogs.
