Guest guest
I am a new member, just joined up this week. At 47 years old and after 6 surgeries on my feet I am finding my abilities starting to wane. I have continued to lose muscle mass in my calves, and I am having to give up some of the things I enjoy because of the condition of my feet and legs. I have to do a considerable amount of walking in my job and it leaves me totally exhausted (did not realize that fatigue might be associated with CMT until reading here) and my back killing me by bed time. I use to have quite a bit of pain in my feet, but it has decreased mostly I think due to the nerve damage of the CMT. I am afraid that I am headed towards having to file for disability. I have always been self supportive and I am a very independent person, but after 47 years of surgeries and walking on such bad feet and legs, it has taken its toll on my body. I would appreciate any information that anyone could give me concerning DNA testing to confirm which strain of CMT I suffer with. My last two orthopedic surgeons both agreed that I suffer from CMT, and have all the classic symptoms. However, I am sure if I have to file for disability that having medical proof of my disease would be beneficial. Over the years I have heard that there is a doctor/scientist in Greenwood, SC that is one of the top DNA researchers in the world. I thought maybe you folks could help me out on this. I am also following the SSDI posts and trying to learn from them, so keep the info coming. Best wishes to all and keep up the fight to remain active. It is a lot easier to stay active than to get back to it once you stop. I speak from experience.
