I never tried it, you might ask your Dr. The good news is, after treetment. The hair will come back in. Terryrhudson <rhondahudson@...> wrote:

It looks so scraggly and dry that I went and got about 4 inches cut off this morning. It does look better believe it or not :) They suggested I buy Nioxin Shampoo and Scalp Treatment.

Has anyone heard of this? I'm wondering if it's safe to use while on treatment?

Thank you!!

I used nioxin shampoo. My hair thinned, but no bald spots. I found it at

an outlet at the mall, it was a little expensive, but lasted a long time.

It doesn't take much. -dz-

I found it at a salon outlet at the mall, Trade Secret, I think it was. I

would think most beauty salons would carry it.

Try this

I was searching the Internet a couple of years ago and found a special

type of shampoo that is used for chemo patients to avoid hair loss. I do

not remember the name of the active ingredient - chemical - that it

contained. I did find websites where it can be ordered. It was not

available at our local pharmacy but could be ordered through a local

specialty pharmacy. I had been told that it did really help, at least in

many cases. Was expensive, about 20.00 bucks for 12 oz. bottle. Was

suggested it be used before starting tx and during. My dh never lost his

hair. His is very thick and healthy, normally. But he only took tx 24

weeks, and it did thin out some, but not enough where other people would

notice. It was kind of dry feeling and not as shiny. Maybe I can find

the name of the shampoo again, if someone wants to know. To clarify, we

never tried that shampoo. Never got around to ordering any. He takes

fish oil as suggested by hep clinic and it has helped a lot with hair and

skin problems

I have very dry hair left from tx. My last treatment was last October. My hair stopped falling out now, but is very dry and brocken off. I've cut about three inches off in the past month trying to keep up with the breakage. My hair has been growing faster than it has in a long time, and comming in straight (it used to be slightly wavy). I'm going to try a couple of suggestions given during this discussion. The split ends have to go!

Hi, my name is katrina and i was wondering if anyone knows if wieght gain can be part of hep c? Zierhart <dhz920@...> wrote:

Many of the things I had going on, that my dr assured me had nothing to do with the hepatitis, I found many others with this disease suffering the same symptoms. Also, though I didn't suffer hair loss before treatment, it's been a common report that the symptoms of the disease are the same as the symptoms of the treatment. Though type 1b is resistant (type 1 a or B), this is the type most of us have, and we have had some success in conquering that dragon! Good luck -dz-At 10:13 PM 2/12/2005, you wrote:

Hi, I thought I was the only one that experienced this! I started losing hairby the handfulls about two and half years ago. This was prior to my diagnosis, and I have not had any treatment. I am a genotype 1b and I understand that it is very resistant to treatment...I also do not have insurance.Anyway...my hair was very long and curly..and once it started to let go,it was only about three months before I had to have it cut below my ears.I went to my GP..no help. I went to a holistic practitioner, and she agreedto give me some medication to treat underactive thyroid. I still did not improvereally..I had been to a dermatologist in town, and he was no help.I sought a second opinion from a dermatologist and the first question SHE askedme was, have I had a liver function test? You can imagine my horror when the hepatitis was discovered by a dermatologist! It

turns out that I had elevated alt, and ast during both of my last pregnancies, and my GP never said anything about it! The derm requested records, because I told herthat I had a couple of tests done over the last ten years. My GP told me for years that the hair problem was just age and hormones.I went to him five years ago when my hair became unusually brittle and started to go silver very quickly. He treated me like I was wacko!I had gone in for the same complaint at least three other times...and each timeI was brushed off.I do think that the hair is a great barrometer for your over all health, consideringthere really has to be something wrong for your hair to be affected. I just knewsomething was terribly wrong with me, and I could not get anyone to listen.Although I am devastated by the diagnosis, at least I know there is a reasonfor all of the trouble I have been having.Treatment for me is even more scary for

me now, I've already lost a great deal of hair, I don't want to lose anymore. Then again...maybe if it is successful, I will getback more of it! ....still scary.I absolutely believe that the loss is related to the hep C.I recently met a Gastro-doc through a friend of mine, and he is going to arrange treatmentfor me if I wish. He can get me meds for no cost, but I have to pay for labs and officevisits..that can still be very $$. He says I only need to do it for a month to determinewhether or not I will respond. If there is no difference after a month, we know we canstop wasting time and money...if I do improve, we can continue on and hope for the best. There are many programs in many states that offer no or low cost treatments.Look for a PUBLIC health clinic in your area.

I haven't heard that complaint. Most of us have lost weight on the

treatment. I lose about 20 pounds (that was the only welcome side effect

for me, I had 20 to lose).

It affects different people differently, so I wouldn't say that it's not

possible, but I don't believe I've ever talked to anybody who has gained

weight while on the treatment. Quite the opposite, some people who were

already thin, found the weight loss a problem. -dz-

I also have hair thinning and used to have wonderful thick hair. But

mine is principally the crown and temple areas. I have been dx'd

hashimotos hypo so have the thyroid problem which could account for

the hairloss as well, and now an ND seems to think I have adrenal

fatigue which he says could count for the hairloss or thinning. I

controlled the actual loss by taking silicia pellets but don't see

regrowth yet. I also would hope that this problem would correct with

explant, which I am scheduled for June 6th. I have my consulation on

4/29.

Hi Zoey,

I lost a significant amount of hair, and didn't take anything for it. I'm a

little over 3 years post op and it's now starting to thicken back up somewhat.

However I still go through periods of hair loss. Although I didn't have thick

hair to begin with, mine got pretty darn THINNNNN! I should have taken the

extra supplements :)

Good luck!

is... any of you that have gone through the hair loss thing NOT take the extra

supplements or do anything to prevent further loss? If I do nothing am I going

to end up bald? The hair is going to grow back right? I really don't want to

have to fool with MORE supplements or rogain or anything like that. Right now

its not noticeable. Thanks...Zoey

Zoey -

My hair loss started at about 4 months. The only thing I did about it was fuss

about it to my hairdresser. After a while, we started seeing new growth. Now,

I'm 13 months out and my hair is back to normal. I think our bodies goes

through a shock period and in addition to losing weight, we lose hair too.

Don't stress out about it -- only makes it worse. Just know that it will be

back.

EXERCISE: On another note, please start an exercise program now if you are not

on one. I waited about a year to start excercising consistently and I shouldn't

have. I now walk about 30 minutes in the morning and then go to the gym and do

some weight training and ride a recumbant bike for another 30 minutes. I

thought I felt good before excercise -- now there's no stopping me.

So many times people are looking for a magic bullet for all this. I agree with

Dr. Rutledge that if we eat a healthy diet and exercise, we will be okay. I

don't shop around for a lot of supplements. I do take my 3 vitamins, 2

prilosec, and 2 calcium with vitamin D every day. I continue to eat my yogurt

and drink V-8 in addition to my healthy diet.

Good luck on the hair issue. It will eventually go away.
