Responding to your message April 4, 2005 Mrs. Dawn Aldredge Avenue Cranford, NJ 07016 Dear Dawn: Thank you for contacting me regarding the Food and Drug Administration's (FDA) pending approval of silicone breast implants. I am deeply disturbed by the possibility of approval of these devices without serious study about their efficacy and safety. Silicone implants were removed from U.S. markets 11 years ago in response to serious concerns about their health effects. An FDA study published in May of 2001 indicated possible connections between ruptured implants and fibromyalgia and various connective tissue diseases. This study only lasted three years; it is important that longer-term health risks are known before this product is considered safe. I hope that the FDA will not approve silicone implants before it has satisfactorily addressed these concerns. I will continue to monitor this situation closely, and I thank you for your comments.
