Guest guest
Cool! Mention the 90% abortion rate for prenatal diagnosis…that usually shocks people. I got interviewed a couple of weeks ago by a reporter from our local paper for a story about our Buddy Walk and our support group, and when I mentioned the 90% rate, he was speechless…I don’t think he really believed me;-) but when the story came out, he wrote.. ‘according to many websites, the abortion rate is 90%’...so he apparently looked it up as well, which was good…and then went on to quote parents in the story to support our assertion that life was not grim like we thought it would be, and we felt very blessed to have our kids. The only thing that I wish I had mentioned and didn’t was that there is a waiting list for families who want to adopt children with Ds. I attached our article so you can take a look if you are interested (and yes, so you can see the picture of Danny again;-) From: DownSyndromeInfoExchange [mailto:DownSyndromeInfoExchange ] On Behalf Of Carlson Sent: Thursday, September 25, 2008 11:53 AM To: Carlson, ; DownSyndromeInfoExchange ; tiffany c Subject: [DownSyndromeInfoExchange] HELP I am going to be interviewed! What a great opportunity and you are gonna do great!!Since it's a Catholic publication, you may want to bring up how important it is to include people with DD into the church, including school. :-) Timely considering some of our latest discussions regarding private christian schools not wanting to accept our children into their classrooms. Guest guest
That is a great idea! It has always really bugged me that kids w/disabilities are often discriminated against by the very people that you would think would be the most accepting. Guest guest
Amen... that is also on my list. That Makes me so mad! Blue ribbon schools are fine and dandy.. but I found it ironic that the Catholic Elementary school I attended.. a blue ribbon.. had NO kids in it with delays of any type.. AND... Ironically.. it had the " let the children come unto me" engraved in stone above the entrance. Course that was in the late 70's.. but still. I am sure it has not changed. My local will not accept any children even with a simple learning issue like Dyslexia. I think its totally SINFUL. Money my arse.. they can pump it into gyms.. grr Steph [DownSyndromeInfoExchange] HELP I am going to be interviewed! Guest guest
I second that AMen...There is an effort by a few to try to get funding for Catholic schools to accept children with special needs but it doesn't seem to be going very far. To me- it is taking the " pro-life " message to its fullest extent....welcoming our kids in Catholic schools and providing for them a Catholic education. This was our topic of conversation last night at the dinner table. I agree wholeheartedly with Sen Brownback when he says we should not only be pro-life but " whole-life " . Good luck, I just did the same and made sure that before they publish it that I had to see the final draft and have editing priviledges on my own words. Guest guest
this is exactly why we had to move - we planned to send our kids to Catholic school until was born with Ds - then we had to move to a better school district since he would need to be in public school. Guest guest
My daughter, Isabella, attended a local Catholic school here....the school is preschool through college. They had no reservations about taking her in preschool and there was another boy in her class also who was quite delayed in speech. In addition, another Catholic grade school (k-8) has been more than willing to take on special needs children. There is a boy we have been friends with for years who is on the autistic spectrum who has been enrolled there since K and is now in 8th grade this year. Next year he will be going to the high school where Isabella went to preschool. I can not tell you how many other special needs children there are enrolled, but the administration was more than willing to work with the parents of this boy. Sometimes I believe we as parents need to be willing to speak to the administration and get them to work with us (become partners). Since I home school all of my children this has not been an issue for me; but if I didn't home school I would be speaking to these schools and trying to work with the teachers to make that environment work for Isabella. Guest guest
Same as others have said, acceptance into the church and school. Our Catholic school will accept mild disabilities, if you're already a member. They had a child in a wheelchair, don't know if she is still there, but her intelligence was close to average. Our Lutheran school that our 2 older kids attended refused to enroll Faith even in preschool and we left that church. Mainline denominations don't seem very accepting of differences. ette mom to Faith (11)DS -------------- Original message from " Carlson" : -------------- LSShort- my parents had their 50th anniversary.. and got interviewed by our local diocesan paper. There is a self-advocate, Gaffney, who also attended Catholic school. She graduated with a full high school diploma and went on to obtain an associate's degree and a certificate to be a teacher's aide. I think it depends on where you live. Here in northern NJ, my daughter attends the local public school, but spends most of her time in a self-contained class. From what I've heard, she's the VERY FIRST person with DS to attend this school. When I went to enroll Theresa in religious ed last year (what we used to call CCD), the director told me she was going to be the first child with DS in that program, too!! I tell people that Theresa will be receiving her First Communion this year and they all seem very surprised. I HOPE that's because she's so small and they assume she's about 4 or 5 years old and not 7 1/2. It will be interesting when we attend mass at other parishes and my peanut goes up to rightfully receive communion!! I'll have to stay behind her to indicate that Theresa can rightfully receive it!
