"Micheline B. Lambert" delphine1939@... How many of you are unhappy with the way you look? Many of us are but would you go as far as to change your look with plastic surgery? Plastic surgery is one of the hottest new crazes states the website independent.co.uk/news. Women all over the world are changing the way they view themselves by getting breast implants. What we don't know about these women is what happens to them after the surgery. Imagine that you are a woman who found out because of changing her appearance by getting breast implants you are growing sick and don't know why or that you could never breast feed your children for fear that you will harm them. Your once beautiful appearance is now ugly and distorted because of a choice to look better. Examples like this are happening all over the United States everyday. I have been researching this topic for the past few weeks and want you to become aware of these happenings. The plastic surgery industry hides many things from the public and we become misinformed. Most of our information about breast implants is all about how it can better our appearance but no one tells us about the side effects or real truth. Throughout this speech we will look into the safety factors and risks, cover-up stories, and case studies of breast implants and their victims. One factor that always comes first to mind about breast implants is how safe they are and what are the risk factors? The safety of plastic surgery is always a big concern before any operation. Many believe that an implant procedure is harmless and minor but according to FDA consumer because of widespread reports of adverse reactions to silicone gel-filled implants and lack of evidence supporting their safety led the food and drug administration to order the devices off the marker in April 1992. Saline implants were allowed to stay on the market while studies were conducted and written information must be provided on the known and possible risks of their products. This means that even though saline implants are still on the market they were never FDA approved because manufacturers could not provide FDA information of safety. According to www.ephca.com a shell or the envelope, which is made of silicone gel from the implants, covers the implant itself. Silicone is a basic element that causes immune system changes. This is one of the major risks of breast implant patients. According to an article written by Cherry Norton, one in seven women experience problems after breast implant operations. Last year alone more than 167,000 women choose to have breast implants according to Glamour magazine. 24,000 women in the United States alone are experiencing difficulties. With receiving implants there is an increased risk of breast cancer. Implants make it harder to detect breast cancer. The cancer cells can be confused with calcifications around the implant on a mammogram. The cancer is than less curable because it takes longer to detect. There are many symptoms that imply leakage but many surgeons disregard that fact. The implant is filled with chemicals that are considered to be very harmful to the human body. According to Dr. Grossman, some of these chemicals include acetone, zinc oxide, and talcum powder not including the silicone itself. These chemicals can leak through the envelope and affect the immune system. The first cause of action is to remove the implants but this does not guarantee to fix the problem. www.fda.gov states that a leakage may happen again with additional surgery. A major problem with plastic surgery is what you are told in the office and what really happens. This brings us to the plastic surgery cover-up stories. According to Ilena Rosenthal, author of Breast implants: the myths, the facts, the women, two million women were infected because the manufactures failed to test them before they were placed on the market. The victims are blamed for their misguided choices. No plastic surgeon mentions the overgrowth of fungus, mold and bacteria that finds breeding ground in the implants. The implants are at first believed to be sterile but through deflation, storage and inflation a contamination may occur. In 1998, according to Glamour, 43,600 women had their implants removed because of complications. New implants are not always the answer to fix complications. US Magazine states that it’s not unusual for patients to have additional surgery. The women are not informed of the reconstructive surgeries and expenses. During my research I got in touch with Ilena Rosenthal who is Director of the Humanistic Foundation for women and author of the book stated earlier. She helped me understand the heartache many women are going through. I spoke and emailed to many whose whole life became affected. Every story was different but each ended the same. Let's take a moment to step into these woman's shoes so you can feel the pain I heard and read. Women had become sick and doctors told them there was nothing wrong. Taking matters into their own hands to find the cause of their pain but always resulting empty handed. Imagine not knowing what's wrong with you doctors telling you, you were fine. Finally you realize the symptoms began when you had your implants. You have them removed and many surgeries later your figure id distorted because you no longer have breasts. You feel unwomanly and ashamed. There is a loss of hope and your whole life is affected. Your job, children, marriage are entangled because of a desire to look better. The implants that were supposed to enhance your beauty not only stole your womanhood but also ruined your life. I urge everyone to hear and listen to the pain and feel what these women are going through. Implants are a growing problem in the world today and I want you to remember what implants are truly about. Implants have no long term testing and are not FDA approved. In surgery there is a risk of infection. You have an increased risk of breast cancer. All this heartache and pain to look beautiful. So remember the next time you look into any plastic surgery know to find out the whole truth before making a decision.
