Guest guest
yes there are programs, but only for those who recieve ECI/Ready start and that stops after age three. if he is on social security, he should automatically qualify for medicaid. Should he qualify ofr medicaid, and you have major medical, you might quailfy for the HIPP reimbursement program that reimburses you some or all of the insurance premiums that you pay for major medical. it has been a lifesaver for us, so if he has medicaid and you want more info on HIPP, let me know, and i'll send you the info i've got. Guest guest
also, if not already, sign up for CLASS and DADS. www.dads.state.tx.us. or toll free . there is a long (5+ years) waiting list and you need to keep in contact with them at least every year for the first few years and every 3-6 months thereafter if you change addresses and/or phone numbers. once they notify you that your number is up and you don't respond, you get knocked off the list and have to move heaven and earth to get back on & get called again anytime soon. basically this entity provides medicaid which covers various therapies - OT, PT, Speech, Aqua, Hippo, Music, etc. (I'm in the process of trying to get ABA so we'll see if that gets added, too.) Also, it covers medical equipment if needed and there are respite hours included. downside - if you don't already have someone to come care for your child, you're at the mercy of the service provider agency to find qualified attendants and so far we haven't found one qualified. but - it's there. ashley proa wrote: yes there are programs, but only for those who recieve ECI/Ready start and that stops after age three. if he is on social security, he should automatically qualify for medicaid. Guest guest
, how did you go about getting CLASS to consider ABA therapy? Who are you working with to get this accomplished? Any information would be appreciated. Guest guest
You don't have to " already have " someone. You can always look for someone to hire yourself. As a matter of fact, they would pay for the advertisement. Finding a qualified one and someone suitable is another story. > downside - if you don't already have someone to come care for your child, > you're at the mercy of the service provider agency to find qualified > attendants and so far we haven't found one qualified. but - it's there. > > ashley proa wrote: > yes there are programs, but only for those who recieve ECI/Ready start and > that stops after age three. if he is on social security, he should > automatically qualify for medicaid. Guest guest
My son hasn't started school yet, so I am still on the social security issue. I am in shock that my son, who has been diagnosed with autism, does not automatically get Social Security. He is three. My husband makes a decent living, but I just thought that all disabled children got token social security payments to pay for necessary medical expenses, regardless of parents income. It's still shocking to me that this is not the case. This, together with the 10 year wait for Texas MHMR is a egregious injustice. > > I have a son (5) with Autism. Guest guest
but try to think of it this way... there are some people who are just not able to make a decent living, to have a job that provides basic insurance, much less insurance that will cover therapies, not able to do for their children. those are the people that ssi is intended for. disability should not automatically indicate government subsidies. your son is 3. one day, he'll be 18. it kind of makes sense for you to use your personal funds now since your husband is able to earn a living, so that govt assistance will be available to your son when he's 18 or 21 or 24 or whenever you are no longer able to provide for him.
