Guest guest
Irene, VATER is an accronym for many medical problems. V vertebral anomalies vascular anomalies A anal atresia T tracheo-esophageal fistula E esophageal atresia R renal anomalies radial dysplasia When my grandson, Aidan was born, he was missing part of his esophogus that went to his stomach, he had a tube that connected the two esophogus tubes, he had a floppy trachea, his aorta is on the wrong side(but works), he has 2 large holes in his heart, he had kidney reflux(it is better now), He doesn't have anal atresia but he does have what looks like the beginnings of that from when he was in the womb, He has acid reflux because of the trache problems, he has horible eczema, and he had a bone grow over his soft spot. Since Aidan was born, he had a surgery to repair the esophogus, then when he was 5 months old, he went into cardiac arrest 2 times within less than 48 hours, the doctors then sewed his aorta to his chest cavity to open his trache, (this didn't really work), then when he was 7 months old, he went into cardiac arrest while he was visiting me, after several minutes of me giving him cpr, he was alive, and then life flighted to the nearest hospital. A week later, he was given a tracheotomy. This stopped the cardiac arrest problems he was having. On his first birthday, he had surgery for the bone over the soft spot,(they scrapped the bone away and put in plates and screws) Then he had ear tubes(this was something we welcomed, because we were feeling normal! LOL) A couple of months ago, he had his trache removed and he is doing well with that, and now we keep having to reschedule his heart surgery because he keeps getting runny noses! (You know how hard it is to keep a 2 yr old free of a runny nose!) Despite all of Aidan's health problems, you would never know by looking at him what is going on inside him! He is a normal, energetic, 2 yr old! He is behind in his speech, but he was deaf for a while because of the ear tube problems and his trache slowed him down a bit. But, while I was visiting this past week, I got him to say " I Love You " and his mom and dad say that he had never said it before! So, I feel honored! LOL We know that Aidan is in God's hands and he is our true miracle baby. When the doctors went in to do the tracheotomy, they said he did not even have a fraction of an inch of space in his trache and they had no idea how he was breathing on his own. I told the doctors I knew EXACTLY how he was breathing on his own!!! Thanks for asking! Kristy Gunnels wrote: Thanks for the " encouragement " !!! Guest guest
Kristy - I had no idea Aidan had gone through so much. I have never heard of VATER syndrome either. It is heartbreaking to hear some of the things our babies have to go through. I thank God each and every day that Adam has no major health problems. Keep us informed about his heart surgery. I will keep you and Aidan in my prayers. Donna - Adam( 2 yrs. mds) and Skylar's (23 months) gram -- Re: Irene: VATER syndrome Irene, VATER is an accronym for many medical problems.
