Kristy,

This sounds like Adam's problem too because he seems to have an excessive

amount of saliva. We will start working with him on the swallowing. He is

having his speech eval today, so I will talk to them about it also. Thanks.

Donna,

It could be the tonsils, but I also had this problem with Tim when he was

young. The drooling was excessive to the point that his shirt was soaking

wet all of the time. His doctor had told me that he had immature salava

glands(don't know if this is true or not) and that he just didn't know when

to swallow. So, I continueally reminded him to swallow and eventually, he

quit drooling. He still has a lot of salava and will spit when talking if he

isn't careful.

I would suggest that you tell him to swallow many times throughout the day,

and he will eventually get in the habit of not drooling.

I hadn't responded to this post...but just wanted to add that does

this as well~ he often has excess saliva in the corners of his mouth when he

talks, and has been known to drool now and then... just last week, he " got me " ,

he was looking down at something as he said something about it, an DRIP, all

over my arm... I didn't get angry, just said, " awww !! " but got

defensive because my 2 yr old said, " ewwww sick " (but he says that to just

about everything...LOL) I thought the whole thing was pretty funny, I dont

think was amused though ;)

Hi Donna. My son just turned 3 and he is very delayed with speech.

Although his muscle tone is pretty good, he is following the Sara Rosenfeld

protocol regarding his oral motor weakness. did not drool but they

have specific exercises to stop drooling...Straw drinking is one method.

Different whistles, Biting, etc., each exercise geared to different problems. I

am

sure the speech therapist will be familiar with the program. I really believe in

this program. The stronger his mouth becomes, the easier it will be for him to

talk. It is good that you are talking care of it early!!! Insist on as much

speech as you can get!! Where do you live? We are in Connecticut. LOL

Thank you for the advice . I will be checking into this method. We

live in Northwest Indiana just outside of Chicago. Adam has his therapist

through a program we have called First Steps. Unfortunately, he had a

speech eval the other day and they told us he will be recommended for speech

therapy but there is a shortage of speech therapist in our area. This means

we may have to wait a while. In the mean time she told us several things to

work on with him. He knows a couple of words - hi, bye, cat, no, baby and a

few signs. He makes a lot of clears sounds, la la la or de do de do like

singing, so the therapist said that is a good sign. We will just keep

working on it.
