Guest guest Posted April 1, 2001 Report Share Posted April 1, 2001 i am new to this list but i have a almost 5year old son dx autistic/pdd-nos he wont be going to kindergarden this fall but will be next fall and i plan on mainstreaming him with a 1one1 aide the school dist is aware of it and did tell me about their special class but i know my son wont benefit from that he very verbal and learns from older typical children all i know is its to be your choice i think they have to hire an aide if that what you need but i dont know much more than that yet since im not in the main school dist yet just in the preschool part michele in pa thank you i was wondering if I could have some outlooks on mainstreaming a child with PDD/NOS?julie Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
Guest guest Posted April 1, 2001 Report Share Posted April 1, 2001 While it depends on the severity of the PDD/NOS, and the particular array of symptoms, my impression is that the outlook is generally good. I've gotten the impression that autism tends to be the more challenging condition, but I could be wrong. We have plenty of autism parents to correct me. Also, it's easier if you just have PDD/NOS or Aspergers or Autism to work with, and not juggling ADD/ADHD or a handful of other things as well. Our son is currently being mainstreamed - even when homeschooling, he and his NT sister were still getting a full load (and then some - whatever was going to keep them challenged). We've never wanted him taken out of the classroom for special work. He's very intelligent (certainly not uncommon), and can handle the work - as long as he remembers where the real world is. Also, he's fairly socially aware, just not socially adept. Granted, I worry about what's going to happen when he gets into the adult real world, since he displays stronger Aspergers behavior than I did at that age, but as long as we can treat this as a challenge, and not a disability, I believe he's going to be fine in the mainstream world. You don't say where you're from, but you might ask around (pediatrician, here, local health centers, etc.) and see if there are face-to-face groups in your area.
