A single gene, called PTPN22, is the first major genetic marker to be identified as carrying an overlapping risk for four different forms of autoimmune disease: rheumatoid arthritis (RA), systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), type 1 diabetes and both major types of autoimmune thyroid disease — Graves' and Hashimoto's.
