Hi All,

I am a 30yo with AS. It wasn't until I was 25 that we (my parents and I)

figured out why I was 'so different'. Despite this, I have managed to

complete Senior High School, Hold down the same job for 9 1/2 years and am

now in my Third year at University. I'm studying to be a Primary

(Elementary) school teacher.

Having learnt how to function 'normally' within society and having got to

where I am in life (it hasn't always been easy - in fact, I have struggled

to achieve EVERYTHING that I have, I just don't give up, I'm not a quitter)

I am interested in talking to both adults with AS (to compare 'notes') and

to parents of AS children. I really feel that my 'life story' is one that

can be of encouragement to those suffering with children who have AS

Look forward to hearing from anyone out there in 'cyberland' about AS and

how they have coped (Adults) and parents of AS children, who need some

encouragement that there is', indeed HOPE for their children of getting on

in the world.

Regards,

Grant

Hi Grant,

I am also a 30yr old with AS. I was dx autistic at 2yrs, but when I was

reading on a 6yrs old level 6mths later, the dx was revoked. However, they

neglected to see that all of my autistic behaviours were still in existence.

I have struggled through school and university - not academically as my IQ

is somewhere in the 130's, but socially I was a mess. I am a teacher of

kids with language disorders, and I thoroughly enjoy working with them -

especially the kids we get on the 'spectrum'. I would love to hear from you

and how your experiences have been,

Sandi

I know the reason my son shuts down in a regular ed environment is because he simply can not process all the sensory input coming in. There is so much going on with 20-30 kids, stuff on the walls, noise level, and smells. It is just too much for him. So now he is in a SDC class. He enjoys school so much more and is making better progress. Here is the problem, though. , like most aspies, is very smart. But the SDC class moves at a very sloooooow pace. So, here we are, at the end of kindergarten, with him already about 6 months behind his regular ed peers. Yet I know if I put him in a more challenging regular ed environment for first grade, he will shut down again like he did when we tried that at the beginning of K. Caught between a rock and a hard place.

Here is what I plan to do. I have bought a bunch of activities for K and 1 from a local teaching supply place, plus borrowed some stuff from his school (I am lucky in that I teach at the same school my son goes to, but you may be able to talk to one of the regular ed teachers and see if you could borrow some materials over the summer. Be sure to take good care of the materials and return them at least two weeks before school starts up again.) While my daughter is at her various camps and activities this summer, he and I are going to have "school." Hopefully, this will catch him up a bit.

Good Luck,

Debi

Hi,My name is Stacey. I have a daughter 11yrs. with aspergers/ADD. I'm very excited to join this group. My daughter was dignosed at the age of 5 yrs. She just started social which she loves. I do have a problem. My daughter has been maistreamed twice and when she is in a normal class setting she shuts down. By the time I get her back in special ed setting She loses her memory in some accadimics. Her neuro says she's putting most of her memory in short term. It's a problem Asers have. I'm going to ask for a special tutor for her next year. She well be going into 6th grade and is still doing third grade work in math. The last group I was in told me ASers all have a high IQ and to get her re evaluated because that is not a ASers problem. My daughters IQ is 117. That is not her problem. By the wasy after that I left that group. I did'nt much support there. Anyways Help. Has anyone had to do this. I know they are going to tell me is smart and she will get caught up., but three years behind. I think she needs help.ThanksStacey

Stacey - My kiddoes are younger so I am afraid I can't be much help except to make sure you know this group is awesome - and the people on this list are great at giving support as well. Glad to see you here and can't wait to get to know you better! Katrina I'm new Hi,My name is Stacey. I have a daughter 11yrs. with aspergers/ADD. I'm very excited to join this group. From what I have heard most of these kids are good at either math or language arts. In my case my son is in 6th grade this year. He just brought a paper home saying he has been screened for pre algebra and passed. He had a 97 average in math this year. On the other hand his language arts class is very difficult for him. He just scraped by on his reading EOG. HE said by the time he got to the end he was only looking at the questions no the story or whatever it was.

When C was younger he was in a Special Ed classroom. Since Math was his best class they mainstreamed him just in that class and he had all the others in EC. Later he was mainstreamed for science his second best. The way his IEP was set up he gets so many hours in EC and so many in regular classroom. That way he was getting extra help with the reading and writing but was advancing in the regular math class. I am considering sending him to Sylvan Learning center to help him with his reading. I think that would help with all his classes.

Debbie,

Thank God I'm not the only one. The other group made it sound like

my daughter was mentally unsound. It really mad me mad. I actually

went out today and bought a book today and we will start on it in

the summer. I hope it helps her. will not be mainstreamed

again unless I know she well not stress out. Thanks for letting me

know I not alone.

Thank you everyone. I feel like at least I not the only one with

this problem. I'm going to talk to her teacher on tuesday. I'll see

if I can get some ideas from her teacher. Thanks again.
